Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Pretty much anything GreenFire has or had is available. The more people breeding those breeds the lower in cost they get. There was recently someone on our state thread trying to get rid of a young breeding trio of Marsh Daisy's for $60 on Craig's List, no takers. I told him he was messing up, should've explained how rare they were and asked for a couple hundred $, might have sold them IDK, Lol!
Pretty much any of the many breeds we have had here in the US is still available from hatcheries, and some much better quality from breeders.
Sand Hill Preservation Center has quite a few rare breeds also, I had a Manx Rumpy and a bunch of Red Sussex for packing peanuts when I ordered my white Jersey Giants from them.
I was looking forward to keeping the Sussex, I know of only one other place that has the red variety and these were beautiful. They grew fast, but didn't get very meaty, lay great, but small eggs...So I ate the two roosters and the hens will go sometime.
Giving the naked necks a try now, heard nothing but good stuff on them.

I didn't know about marsh daisys, so I googled them. They are beautiful chickens!

I think the Marsh Daisy's are neat looking and wouldn't mind having some. I wouldn't pay Green Fire Farms prices though, not even close to what they want.


I would also like to try some of Sand Hills chickens . I see they don't have Naked Necks. I need to send them some eggs to hatch so they can start carrying them.

If you had an Amerucana that also had FM it would then be an easter egger, but yes especially if you kept to the black or birchen feather colors.

How heavy do your White Jersey Giants get? And do they do well in the heat?

I recently stumbled across a breeder of Black Jersey Giants who said his main breeding rooster holds the state weight record at 26 lbs. Needless to say, that got me thinking about adding these big boys to my meat breeding program.

I could have gigantic JG/NN crosses roaming all over my property.

I recently stumbled across a breeder of Black Jersey Giants who said his main breeding rooster holds the state weight record at 26 lbs. Needless to say, that got me thinking about adding these big boys to my meat breeding program.    I could have gigantic JG/NN crosses roaming all over my property. 

Heat, about as hot as it usually gets here we have had already, 95, didn't bother them at all. Size, I don't know yet, this is my first crack at them and they won't be a yr old till July 5. They are absolutely the biggest birds I've ever saw. The hens started laying in the middle of dark dreary freezing February and have laid every day since.
Last time I weighed one of the cockerels, March 4, only 8.5lbs, frame size is huge, they don't put weight on till they're yr old I hear so we'll see. They claim the whites are usually a lb smaller than the blacks. I'll weigh him again tomorrow, been wanting to anyways.
I read on 'Maria's Jersey Giants' website someone has one of her roosters that's 23lbs, her's range 15+lbs, hens 8-10 but mentions one hen from chicks she sold showed at the county fair at 13lbs.
I was reading about showing them and it was mentioned that even though the standard for cocks is 13lbs quite often 16-18lb cocks are shown and they do not deduct for that.

Some of my current flock have Jersey Giant in them. It has added good size to the roosters and better size on the hens. Although I'd like to see just s bit more size on the ladies. I'm trying to do a little more breeding with my current flock but am on the look out for another JG rooster in about a year and half.

The flock that I had at one time they were bought by someone else from Maria's Giants. I kept them until they laid for a couple of months. The Black roosters ( never weighed them) but a good guesstimate would be 13 to 15 pounds. The Blur went a little under 10 to 11 pounds.

The blue was the last Jersey Giant that I had. I only have 2 daughter of his now as the last hen I lost was his only other one. I wound up with mostly cockerels from him and didn't retain any.

My Golden Oartrudge rooster us a grandson of one of the Bkack Gisnts that I had. I got a 1/2 Jersey daughter ( no NN blood) and breed her to a NN rooster. I don't weigh my roosters but I'd say this one will probably go a good 8 to 8 1/2 pounds and he's only a year old this Indy May.

You can get ameraucanas?!? They are my number 1 favourite breed.

Seems like you have quite a lot chickens, how many exactly?

@Kev and @Kassaundra , black skinned ameraucanas-shouldn't be hard to get, right?

I was supposed to get an ameraucana cockerel but the same day I went to pick him up he escaped the cage and stupid geese killed him

he was the last one so the breeder gave me a rumpless araucana instead. I am currently looking for an ameraucana pullet but they usually sell a male and a female together.

I have 29 adults and 12 teenagers. males are: my avatar red sex link, a brahma cross, araucana, buff orpington and 3 bc marans. females are: 7 Nn, 2 brahma, 2 bcm, 1 faverolles, 3 araucanas, 2 white leghorns, 3 red sex link, 1 black sex link, 1 lakenvelder, 1 red wyandotte and the rest are mutts. I am going to pick up a black NN hen and 1 or 2 buff orpington pullets. not to mention 6 muscovie ducks and 1 drake.

That is quite a number there!

I currently have 9 hens and a rooster -all are mixes - three turken hens and to be honest to you guys I would like to have even less.
