Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Apparently there might be a link somewhere up there in that space but I simply cannot see it...........

I have to say there is some charm in the idea of getting their NN, maybe some Rainbows and being done with diddling with all those different projects.

But I already see chicken math problems.. I like fibro. as far as I can tell, all of their NN/Rainbows are wheaten, which is a big repressor of fibro.. I also like the idea of crossing in my single comb colored egg layers, that part will be easy just breed with any of their stock and it is good to go.

Oh do show us the black one(s)! Linda has very nice looking birds with great proportions.

What are white chants under their white feathers though? if they are dominant white, then they absolutely have to genetically black, most likely also barred... this would be great news for your black chant project. However if they're recessive white, then they could be almost any color.

Black crossed with a color chicken will throw leaky blacks. Unfortunately it is not terribly easy to breed out the leaky areas, especially without a solid black backcross.

More important than everything, do take it easy on yourself though..
We're going to WV Friday and coming back Monday or Tuesday. By then the chicks well be ready to go out to meet the world and it will be so much easier to photo them there.

I realize creating a black Chant. is a pipe dream but if I can make a little headway, it should help put more leg and longer muscle on the birds chosen for caponization. I had initially thought stealing them from WV was easier and certainly more fun but the family politics have taken a hit for at least the near term and we've spoiled ourselves to the point that it's just about the only type of bird we really enjoy. We could lower our standards but we know how to do it and one of us is very good at it because he paid attention.

We refuse to join the throngs of folks standing in line at a chicken joint!

I doubt many here remember, but with my last hatch I had one little NN pullet named Rue that got viciously pecked by some of the other birds and had to be separated for a long time while she healed.

This is her "before" picture taken while she was partially healed:

And here she is now at just over 18 weeks (with her best friend, India):

She's still a bit lighter than the rest of the girls in her flock but consistently has the highest growth rate every weigh-in while she continues to catch up to their size....and today she laid her first pullet egg, but it was missing the shell. As shy, timid and sweet as she is, she protected that little egg from the others in her flock in a way that astonished me...not mean, but very self-assured. Yeah...I was a proud chicken mama.

I do remember her as my anita was badly pecked at the young age.

your rue is gorgeous!

I remember her - so glad she is doing so well!

Just thought I'd share some updated photos of some of my NNs from my last hatch:

Simon - the one boy I'm retaining for breeding.

Willa - Another breeder. She's nice and dense and meaty.

Gypsy - one of my two NN/Biel mixes.

Misha - the second of my NN/Biel mixes

And Bucky - he's only 2 weeks younger than Simon but soooo much smaller. Long legs though. He'll be a cull, but I'm going to let him grow out more before butchering.

They look nice, for barred birds. Haha. I do really like that dark red NN/Biel cross hen though. I couldn't see any barring in her in the picture. Does she have barring?

None that I can detect. I'm really curious about how her offspring will turn out when I cross her back to the Biels.

That would be a question for @Kev . I think myself they would have a lot of barring, like the Biels..

it's sex linked- Biel mother with non barred father= barred sons, non-barred daughters.

Bred back to a Biel roo, all chicks will be barred, but all sons will be Bb, in the same vein as NN/Nn/nn. Females are either B- or b- with - standing in for 'doesnt exist due to being on the sex chromosome'

Have a question about Simon, was the father barred? White rock mother, right?

White Rock mother, and no barring on Dad, my NN named Shiloh:

I was surprised by Simon's barring, but pleasantly so.
