Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I've been considering Muscovies for quite a while, and this just gives me one more reason to covet them, but I have to sell my husband on the idea. He still reminds me that 'his' original plan was for 4-6 chickens. I did a current count last night and I'm DOWN to 72 now. He's a wonderfully patient man, but I really don't want to test the limits of that patience.

I think someone else here may have addressed how the trap works, but the simple answer is you activate the poison with water, the flies are attracted to it and fly up into the hole at the bottom, get trapped and die. But ventilation is extremely important when using these. That's why it's hanging on the outside porch of my chicken cabin rather than inside any of the coops. I'm also thinking of hanging one from one of our trees under which a lot of flies seem to hang out.

can you use water with vinegar, beer and some fruit juice instead of poison? this works for sure and vinegar does not attract bees. my parents used the bottle trap with this staff when they had bees. that way you and your animals would be safe, no ventilation needed. you could feed your chickens with those dead flies.

I know chickens eat things no one wants to think about but if my chickens gobbled down that container full of flies (sans poison), I'd be loth to eat so much as one bite of chicken. If they eat the live maggots from wince the flies hatched....no problem for me to gobble down chicken. I guess we all have our personal gag-factors, be they reasonable or not.

Hmm....Interesting thought. This particular trap isn't designed to be reusable, but there's another similar one that I may invest in and try that out. I really am sick of the flies. The mosquitoes are bad too, but we spray down before heading outside and don't suffer from them, but the flies....it's like being in a horror movie. They're relentless!

I finf quite useful, but with 72 chickens, I don't know if that would be possible!

Are you keeping all of these?

No. I've still got over a dozen cockerels and over half a dozen hens that I've selected for cull. After that I'll assess my remaining flock and preferred projects again. My biggest problem is finding the time and energy to get it all done.

I'll take some of the hens off your hands....

Yes, that is one of the biggest problems that sometimes we have too. But I love the feeling after that, some kind of relief.
