Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I guess school brake is the best holiday. at least I loved them. how are your chickens? did you hatch any?

My chickens are doing great, even when it was really hot they didn't seem to be having trouble, they were even laying more then they did in the spring. They started moulting this week.

I didn't hatch anything this year, and I won't. One of the hens went broody last week and we don't like hatching at this time of the year. Also hens that we have are pretty young and lay good so we don't need any more at the moment.

It looks downright tropical around here. We got more than double our average rainfall for monsoon season, and they still insist we're in a major drought. I just don't get it. The mosquitoes and flies are horrible. This is a fly trap, filled after just 4 days:

I love the sight of that trap, lol. how does it work?

I don't have so many flies but there are plenty of mosquitoes. my chickens and muscovie ducks eat them. if you have room a advise you to get some muscovie ducks, they would be much better than that trap. but they should be kept separate from the chickens.

your climate is not meant for autumn/winter hatching. you are dealing well with chicken math. I am overrun with chickens and I must make 2 new coops for my future plans. as I am allowed to keep maximum 50 chickens I am already telling my neighbors that I have about 25. they know that some of my chickens died but they don't know that I got a few new ones. luckily they cannot see all of my chickens from the street and 3 neighboring plots are empty, no houses and no one comes.

I agree!

Where did you get that trap? I have tried 2 different ones, but neither work!

We've bought that type of trap at Tractor Supply. Most feed stores carry them, they really do work. I believe you have to be 18 to purchase (at least from tractor supply) this type so it might use something in it that's not very 'safe' that attracts them. I was shocked when the cashier asked for my DOB to purchase a fly trap (sometimes Darwinism needs to be given a shot) and because we do place them where our animals 'might' be able to get them it raised a red flag for about 2 seconds BUT totally worth it so we just make sure to put it somewhere safe and let it work.

It's not that climate is not good for chicks, but I just don't want to take care of them in the winter when I don't spend any time outside and I don't want to cause any more stress for them at that part of the year.

About the chicken math, yes- it is weird for me too, but I just like small flocks. Things just work better- I had three chances to see that in past few years, I don't really know why, we disn't even get enough eggs at that time. And I read on one site ( I don't know if I can say which) how chickens live natural in small flocks.

About the chicken projects- I have them too- but I focus on one thing for a season- that is the advice that I read on Croatian forum that is now closed. And I can say that I like it.

So how many chickens do you actually have?!?

I think 48 + 6 muscovie ducks.

I divided them in 4 flocks. I can see they prefer smaller flocks. I will make 2 new coops because I will get marans eggs from france from 2 famous breeders. I might slowly get rid of other breeds but I need to hatch those eggs first. the eggs that they sent me arrived broken and spoiled and the next breeding season starts in january. I have been told that the eggs that come with big planes must be vacuum packed. we shall try this next time. I put 8 eggs (out of 48 sent) under the broody but I am not sure if 2-3 were good.

if I was younger I would focus on one thing at a time, but I had to find out fast what breed I want. I will raise black copper and silver cuckoo marans, naked necks with them and a few rumpless araucanas that I will sell fertile eggs and chicks. I will also keep some naked necks with them. I am thinking about some olive eggers too but I don't need a coop for them, I just put 2 green eggers with the marans and hens in a laying flock. the only problem is I have a pair of buff orpingtons and I cannot give my roo away. he comes for hugs, could I give him for someone's dinner?

That's a bummer.. It's kind of annoying and sad when you prepare for and looking forward to and then it doesn't happen or get.

Tractor Supply....and I'm counting down to the day that the one near us finally opens its doors.

I've been considering Muscovies for quite a while, and this just gives me one more reason to covet them, but I have to sell my husband on the idea. He still reminds me that 'his' original plan was for 4-6 chickens. I did a current count last night and I'm DOWN to 72 now. He's a wonderfully patient man, but I really don't want to test the limits of that patience.

I think someone else here may have addressed how the trap works, but the simple answer is you activate the poison with water, the flies are attracted to it and fly up into the hole at the bottom, get trapped and die. But ventilation is extremely important when using these. That's why it's hanging on the outside porch of my chicken cabin rather than inside any of the coops. I'm also thinking of hanging one from one of our trees under which a lot of flies seem to hang out.

That's outstanding advice! And I know I should follow it. That doesn't mean I actually will, but I most definitely should.
