You're making me feel a little better if it is indeed one of the girls I really want babies from. I need to try that food coloring-on-the-vent thing to see who's laying them. (The NNs are the only ones I have a hope of doing that with - they are so sweet and docile).

The NNs I have (from Ideal) are over a year old now. And they are still so great. Love my NNs!!!!

I had a friend give me 3 NN/frizzle eggs, but my hen got her nest mixed up. The eggs went bad. So I got some store eggs (the farm is local) to give to the broody. They were fertile when opened, and are developing. I looked up the lady's number to ask about her chickens, and she said they have many chickens, but that rooster was a NN, and some of the hens too. So i may get NN after all!

today I saw a bird that looked like hawk. my roos were warning the rest of flock like crazy and all of my chickens froze. I looked up and saw huge wings wide open that I have never seen before on the island. there were 2 megpies as well and one started to chase that strange bird and it turned and disappeared behind the hill. I got worried as I never close my coops and my chickens get up and go out as they wish. I heard that crows chase away hawks and just have looked in internet, megpies belong to the crows family. the island is full of them.

As soon as I finished typing out my hopefulness, I went to check on my hen and she ate one of the eggs! NOOO! goo on the others. I wiped them down, and will have to scrape some later. they went to my incubator.+2 more so 10 in incubator. Since the lady just lost her NN roo, I put ma hen in a diff nest box with 10 fresh eggs. It would be nice to get something out of this group...

I'm thinking that there are some chicken owners around here trying to protect their flocks. I've personally chased away half a dozen of them this year...mostly smaller ones, but one guy was HUGE. The crows do help a lot, but when they're hungry and looking for an easy meal I think they'll risk the crows for a quick snatch at some chicken.

the birds here are very nervous of turkey vultures, even though these will never hurt a live bird. Big wings and a nice soaring, tilting habit.

What REALLY sets them off are the white pelicans. They are HUGE and like to fly in formations. So beautiful and cool but oh man, the sky is falling to the chickens and peafowl!

The crows do help a lot, but when they're hungry and looking for an easy meal I think they'll risk the crows for a quick snatch at some chicken.

I cannot let the chicks out at any time or any length of time from fall to mid spring because of the cooper's hawks- there are so many of them and they are so brazen, they will swoop on a chick just 10 feet from me and they keep coming back to kill any more they can find. They don't kill the adults but the occasional one does sit and give them a good stare like they are thinking about it.. sometimes with a half hearted dive before flying away.

There is another bigger one- as big or bigger than redtails that is just as bad, can never remember what they are called.. heavily barred chest and wings, it does not soar.. flies from tree to tree.

Fortunately they are migratory so from mid spring til early fall they are not around and any free range chicks are safe.
