Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hm, thanks for that advice. We had considered keeping the white earlobes for contrast against all the black, but I had been wondering if white earlobes tend to bring red to the face? I'll have to put further thought into that aspect.

It could look nice, they really are beautiful birds with the intense black contrasting with the white of their lobes and red comb/wattles. so white lobes on a fibro might look nice but until someone has done it...

The strange thing is, on silkies their white lobes combine with fibro to create a turquoise color. Not all of them get this, color though.. and the few white lobed fibros I've had in the past just did not have the turquoise color for long if they ever got it.

a long time ago someone got the idea of throwing fibro on white faced black spanish with the idea of turquoise faced chickens. That would really be something, haha...

edited to add- good question about white earlobes making the faces lighter. I have not paid attention to this, my guess is probably not.. however "bleed" is known to happen- the face of white lobed birds eventually getting some white on it as they get older. one of the barbies is showing this. It looks like a dusting of flour on the face.

I read this and immediately ran outside to examine my Silkie crosses. My Bielkies (Bielefelder/Buff Silker) both have darker skin and blue ears.

I never considered ear color as a breeding goal. Gee...thanks a lot, @Kev ...you darn chicken math enabler.

any pics of your Bielkies? Biel roo over silkie hen?

Is the hamster sometimes bouncing around in the wheel? there is a pretty funny video of a couple hamsters trying to run in the same wheel.. man the hamsters seriously get tumbled about..

I have absolutely no idea why the lobes are turquoise on some yet white/off white on others(fibro birds).

they can be green, if the fibro bird is yellow skinned. I've actually had some.. looks freaky.

The only photos I have of them are from their 'younger days' before the girls reached POL...and the boys were butchered. The ears are such a pale blue in these photos that they look more white than blue. If I can get the girls to cooperate I'll try to photograph them sometime over this next week. Right now the high winds are making them hide and freak out over everything.

One interesting thing I noticed about the girls though...for such small birds they actually lay fairly sizable eggs. My Silkie's eggs are only about 1.34 ounces max, but the Bielkies' eggs weighed as much as 1.9 ounces before they went into molt. Now....I'm just waiting patiently (or not so patiently) for them to start earning their keep again.

Edit...and no...I don't think I'm up to another project. Especially now that I've got 8 lovely little Dorking chicks to start working with.

I was just going to say the WFBS would be a good choice if someone wanted a white face on a fibro chicken.

We picked up the NNs! We ended up with 13 chicks. Only 5 were NNs. They had a rough last few days with quitters so they gave us a deal on their entire hatch. We'll probably sell the extras as a barnyard mix this weekend.
Soooooo cute! I love baby pictures!!!

Quote: Oh, there isn't anywhere to roost outside, just on the ground, and I've never allowed it - all bed times since the transfer have been supervised. I just want to get to where I don't have to supervise bed time anymore.

This is the tractor coop they are in, interior floor dimensions 6'x10' (last photo is when it was new, I let them enjoy all the grass before the bedding was put down).

Sure - I'll believe it when I see it...
