Naked Neck/Turken Thread

The swing is great for a little vertical height in a limited brooder and agility and interest... I am quite sure I got the idea from a pic somewhere on BYC. However dear pappa gave me a very strange look when I asked him for a clean decent wood off-cut to make a chick swing. Now I believe he is quite chuffed (secretly pleased) the swing he made is adored - most especially by the little naked neck chick.

@Kev

I figured out the blue I. The. Hicks I was asking about. On closer inspection of the Red Partridge hen that was in the run. She is and was hatched out a oartrudge color. I had not noticed that her underfluff was a blue color. I had thought it was black.

So now I guess that there was no way that she could have been from the Welsummer hens as I had originally thought. So the rooster I had pegged as her daddy could not have sure her either. He had no blue in him anywhere.

So I have to figure out from whence she came. Most likely the old Blue Red rooster that I had and most likely from a Wheaten hen that I had with him. It's just a guesstimate though.

Oh no!! Hope she gets well soon, @DesertChic !

Both of our little red/blonde downed NNs are actually feathering out white/cream/buff-ish with some accenting, going to post pictures tomorrow and see what you guys think. One of the little black NN chicks seems to have some sort of under-developed wings, they won't open all the way, can't figure out if it's time to cull or if it's harmless. Frustrating. That'd bring us down to only 4 fluffies. BUT! We did move up to the new property. And it was 80 degrees today. Definitely warm enough to ship in. *rubs palms together*

Well, dang it! It appears that my favorite NN hen, my sweet Reba, is egg bound. It looks like I'm rearranging my schedule tomorrow to tend to her.

is she the one that was pecked as a chick?

my beautiful girl that was pecked as a chick after a while had laying issues as well. I had to kill her (well, not me) and my mother found a piece of soft shell and something that looked like lash egg.

What color are bantam NN eggs? I've read that the standard size are tinted or brown.

The reason I ask is, last night a couple was over and she she stuck her hand in her pocket and pulled out an egg that she had forgot in her pocket. She asked if I had an incubator going and I said no but she gave me the egg anyway and said, "there's breakfast!" And more onto my question here, when she pulled the egg out her S/O asked if it was a turken egg and she said yes. They do have a lot of chickens and things could have gotten mixed up.

So here I am, saving up a few eggs of my own (and said egg) to put into the incubator... in winter! But it doesn't matter if it isn't a NN, I need to check the fertility of my eggs anyway. (Just an excuse for babies, right?)

Here is a picture of said NN egg on the left, egg from my LF hen in the middle, and bantam polish egg on the right.

No, Reba's always been very hardy and healthy. This is the first time she's shown any kind of issue at all. Thankfully this morning she'd laid the egg by the time I got my tired, gluttonous butt out of bed to feed everyone. It was a sizable egg, but not significantly so compared to what she usually lays. The main difference was the texture of the shell, which was more matte. She's ALMOST behaving normally but seems a bit tired and quieter than normal...she's usually a constant chatterbox when I enter the chicken cabin. I'm going to add a vitamin/probiotic mix to their water this afternoon and just keep a close eye on her. If needs be I'll put her in my isolation pen for a while to give her a break from the breeding rooster and other hens she's penned up with.

This girl is so sweet and so affectionate with me that she once laid an egg right in my lap. I've gotta take good care of her.

Normally I believe they're supposed to lay brown eggs, but NNs are crossed with so many other breeds that they can lay any color egg at all. Mine lay light to dark brown, some with spots, pink, tinted cream, mint green, olive green, blue and pretty much ever color in between.

glad to hear she is better.

in my flock rough shell means something viral. give her some garlic, acv, hot pepper and a few black peppercorns it will boost her imune system, no harm.
