Naked Neck/Turken Thread

The hatch is done! They are all sleeping under the MHP, so I don't have good pics of everyone yet - soon, I hope. All that went into lockdown hatched, so 11 babies. 5 were Goodwin x Arbequina (the olive egger, who is an F2, but importantly, has Wheaten Ameraucana and Splash Copper Marans in her parentage).

I'm going to TRY to describe the down correctly, but of course, might have it wrong. These babies were mostly the chipmunk look of e+ with some blue overtones, but one baby was all blue. All seemed to have feathers on their legs. Here are just a couple shots of one of them.

Then Puppy's eggs - I got all Naked Necks (despite mom and dad both being Nn) - 4 Nn and one NN. I also THINK I have 2 rose combs (it's hard to tell when they're really little) - one of which was NN.

Three were black-downed, with white patches near eyes/beak and the one I've gotten the best look at (earliest to hatch) has a brown overtone to the down on the head and part of the body. Maybe ER birchen) with a modifier that I don't know? Who knows. The other two were yellow downed (Wheaten influence?), one of whom was NN and rose combed (I think) - super excited about that one, It was one of the more recent hatches, so it's sleeping a lot right now, no pics yet. Here's the oldest Nn boy. I think you can see the brown color plus the white patches by eye and beak.

And then....You know the egg that I thought was Switch's egg? It wasn't Switch's egg - pretty sure it must have been the hatchery New Hampshire, Polly. (And there are two more eggs from her up for hatch next week). I got this little bugger - s/he also has irregular large blobs of black on the top of the head:

I'll post more pics when they start coming out to play more - the OE babies and Polly's baby hatched earliest and are coming out, but the others are resting still...

OK, I got them to come out a bit, and have lid eyes on all of the Naked Neck chicks now. Two of the black-downed ones have lots of brown overtone (seemingly over the whole body). The third is more straight black:

And I finally got a shot of the NN rose comb- s/he peeked out:

I'm getting so close to getting my current batch of chicks moved outside (FINALLY) and my NN lust continues...gonna need to find some eggs in the next couple of weeks. I think I want to set some to hatch around my birthday, so I'm looking at the 7th of Feb to set. I might be getting ahead of myself...

See...now I have the urge to start hatching again. Cute babies!!!!
It's sooooo addictive. Esp. when they are in that first few days (before they become messy little hoodlums)

Haha more chickies! the Goodwin chicks are a bit unexpected for sure.. does look e+ but slightly off with that dark neck and lack of eye stripes. they prove Goodwin was not pure E or ER.. it is birds like him that mess with answering genetic questions- quite valid answer(for simplicity you have to assume parents are pure for said traits) would have been to expect all black chicks however there is always a possibility of surprises like these chicks. BUT! if interested... possible to get lavender on e+ or whatever they are by sibling mating.

brown downed chicks like these- Db was named for making E/ER chick down brownish. However eb can look like that, but am not sure if they ever can have the white spots on faces... in my case the brown downed chicks usually turned out heavily marked birchen or eb partridges(never white spots on face for the latter)

She is holding her own, but she really does get shoved around a lot and has to fight to get tot he food. And of course she needs to NOT be in there whenever their hormones wake up. Also, I'm not keeping any of the boys, so this way I can perhaps get her socialized with other pullets that she will live with, instead of having to do the introductions later. At least that's my hope. Not sure what I'm going to do if THIS hatch is almost all boys, too...

In that case, I'd have moved the pullet in with the younger batch- part about later on introduction is an excellent consideration.
