Naked Neck/Turken Thread

@Kev - I confess that sometimes when I read through all of the color genetic info posted here by you and others I feel like I'm reading the comedy routine, "Who's on First" from Abbott and Costello.

had to look that up... it is kinda like that!

Here's a white bird.

Yeah pretty bird, it's black though.
.... Um it's white.. look a it right there! Bright shining white color all over.
White is not a color. It's genetically black.
This bird's color is WHITE! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?! WHITE! WHITEWHITEWHITE!
Yabbut it's black. Trust me.. and black makes for the best whites....

I've been wanting to weigh those chicks- if I remember right, they were 8 weeks old as of last Saturday. Will take a pic at the same time.. she is solid white but due to the extreme storms for the last two weeks all of the chicks are not pristine white right now, sigh.. why do chickens insist on stomping around in the wet end of their pen?

This actually helps a lot. I saw, probably you, post on the colors that go into cx before that's why I was unsure of the possibility of hatching white.

The mottled nn and laced polish I would just figure the colors were the same most likely come out like the mottled rooster, shows how little I know Lol!

The giants, I have one hen that is what you described 'dirty' white, couldn't cull her cause I was severely limited after obvious culls, a hawk and a split hip on two of the nicer pullets, and she is huge, almost as big as the rooster still. Funny thing was she actually was as she got over a yr old she was a lot white and then they molted, when her back feathers came in like a patch of dirty white like a saddle Lol!
My first hatch (should have hatched more...) was mostly cockerels, ended up with only three pullets to add and the biggest one also 'dirty white'....
So... I think I'll go with crossing in a good quality black, will be easier anyway. There is a BYC member not far from me that has been showing his birds, blacks, and has good quality stock.
I was just a little leary of it after reading this; http://nationaljerseygiantclub.com/media/Document_10.pdf, but they didn't go any further with it.
Thanks!

Hm, interesting. Might be something in JG I'm not aware about however breeding with quality blacks is still a great way to improve whites. Sometimes it can be the only way, if better whites cannot be found. Have you tried facebook and poultry show magazines/sites for white JG sources?

Be sure to mark the cross chicks as white carriers. btw, sex does not matter for any of the generations. you may have heard of some sayings such as the rooster gives type, hen gives color- that is nonsense no matter how much they swear by it(sex linked genes being an exception but they are specific genes such as barring- not a broad, mutli genetic thing such as type). If a pullet is the best of the whole lot, use her. If a cockerel, use him. Or use both the best cockerel and best pullet(s).

Good luck!

good question.

when it was rainy and muddy my muscovie ducks were sitting on a roost and my chickens were scratching in the puddles making them small pools, lol. you can imagine how much mud they had all over them! I had to throw some live limestone in there before they get sick.

Hi everyone!

I just went into lock down with 76 fertile eggs... we should be expecting between 20-30 Nn chicks here in the next few days! I just wanted to share our excitement and sprinkle some love on the thread! It's wonderful to see everyone's pictures and its been a real inspiration... looking forward to contributing more soon!

Love your 'Avatar'! Lol! Hope you have a good hatch!

Not much out there at all for whites, not much at all.
The Sandhill stock comes from the original Golda Miller line closed flock, but I don't think he is breeding them for SOP.
The vice president of the national jersey giant club has started with whites recently, see no pics on her website of them, just says "The latest variety acquired is White, one that has been unnoticeable for some time and affirmatively out of the spotlight. The White Jerseys definitely lost showroom luster from when they actually dominated at the markets and shows, but they are making a comeback with some very dedicated breeders. While retaining size and type and with some aggressive culling/breeding they should be void of dusky color and improved leg color, so perhaps they will be once again return to the showstopper from their hay day." , and no other mention of them...

Right now I'm super excited about these 'ugly' super cool naked necks! We've had super cold, warm 30s weeks, zero, 20s, teens, windchill, pretty crappy coops, laying eggs and no freezer burn on their combs! heck with their naked necks! doing awesome! I'm actually thinking of setting eggs soon, was going to wait till spring, May.
Don't think I can wait! Really thinking of setting some very soon!
Nothing like going out to feed, seeing the big red/black flap his wings and seeing all that skin, the white looking at me like he's going to challenge me again, in the snow, while I'm bundled up in my Carhart, pants with thermal underarmor underneath, gloves, thinsulate hat, military mickey mouse boots, and those naked necks are flapping their wings exposing skin!!! And I'm freezing!

So this silver hasn't affected her white coloring at all? Is she recessive white?

So are the White Giants from Sand Hill up to SOP standard weights?

Hey folks,

Just a genetics question: we have 3 naked neck silkie hens in our flock of about 14. They've started laying and the resulting chicks are 2 naked neck, two "standard?" Silkie. Is the naked neck gene dominant or recessive? Since two did not display the presence of the gene does that mean it's recessive? I like the few naked necks we have, but don't want them to eventually become the majority. Will this happen if left alone? Or due to their current minority, and apparent 50% pass down rate, can I expect them to many years down breed themselves out?

Thanks all!
