Especially in the males the chicks will be darker but the adult coloring will lighten.  It isn't as drastic a change in the females, but can be dramatic in the males.  I had a few that you wouldn't know had fm as adults but clearly did as chicks.

Yeah, I know that you fight with that and was wondering if Vader will keep it's colour.

Mottled doesn't go with fm, right?
I saw splash fm hen on instagram it looks awsome! Even better then mottled!

You have a safe place at night right?

Yes, we have never lost a hen during the night-except if it died- but never to predator, but I secured the coop even more now, just to be sure.

The coyotes here are the same way.  We keep our birds behind a 6 foot chainlink fence.

We actually free range our chickens but don't let them out too early- around 11, and close them around 5 pm.

Correct mottled and fm don't work well together. But birchen and fm do

Any of the Fm breeds would work. Ayam Cemani would for sure. The problem w/ most any fm breed I can think of is they are all on the small side. My fm comes from silkie, but many generations before I got my first egg to hatch. Size is still a bit of an issue w/ mine. I would try w/ the biggest fm I could find. I doubt I'd fork over AC money though.

(What's a "cheaper" fm? I'm afraid I don't know all of them, just the ACs and Svart Honas, which I thought were also just as small. I know people from whom I could get eggs for either of these...)
