Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Don't want to be nosey.....lol....what's a fm? Just curious.
Fibromelanosis?
Black skin meat and bones. Weird to see, but supposed to be good for you, much higher in amino acids. Chinese cure for a lot of ailments, I hear more for women though LOL!

Silkies, cemanis and svart honas have it, a few others but not in the US.
What does the black meat taste like? Chicken.... Lol!

I sell my girls that I don't intend to keep. It seems like there is always a waiting list when I don't have any on the chopping block.

(What's a "cheaper" fm? I'm afraid I don't know all of them, just the ACs and Svart Honas, which I thought were also just as small. I know people from whom I could get eggs for either of these...)

If you go silkie don't bother with hatchery ones, they're already crossed with something I'm sure, I'm thinking leghorn at some point cause mine were exceptional early and great layers, not supposed to be. And my cross with white giants resulted in black skin but white breasts and only leg meat black, bones were mottled black, some of the organs were black, and they were small also, still have two pullets, one fibro and one not at all.... Cute birds though, five toes and leg feathers but not silkied feathers.
Go with breeder SOP on silkies and you might have better luck.

Check Craigslist, I found some ACs very close, 30mins from me, had on Craigslist a whole list of available Greenfire rare breeds, didn't list AC but I asked about their Rhodebars and how they were doing with them, emailed me a link to their pintrest account for pics and saw they also have a small flock of AC.
Actually look for them and ask for a cull cockerel, they cull them for white toe nails, but still very fibro, should be able to get them pretty cheap cause they don't need a whole heck of a lot of cockerels anyway. I live a easy drive from a couple BYC members that breed them, Pyxis is one of them, she doesn't ask much at all for culls.

You might be able to find some svart or ac near you and not have to purchase expensive eggs, I have heard svart are better on size?

Kassaundra's birds have made me think about getting some myself, darn beautiful/awesome.
Have you been on drayes facebook NN group? some awesome one's on there!!!

Oh....so fm is not a breed? So black meat carries it, like silkies, ac, sematras, etc.

be careful. there are a LOT selling crosses mixes as one of the fibro breeds to up the price. some are pretty obvious, having crests, and/or leg feathering- supposedly it comes up in american cemanis(which personally I think is a red flag of some sort but anyways..). If you just want to get the fibro trait any of them will work.. but leg feathering is so hard to get rid of.. another reason not to use silkies if this is not wanted.

Right. btw sumatras have only the dark face, their body skin is normal- they don't have fm.

I think black meat has a slight sweet taste. It's pretty nice. It gets overpowered very easily though.. I detect it the most on a very simple grilled with just salt/pepper. can't detect it at all in more flavorful dishes like curry.

Hmmm....start thinking of getting some a.c. eggs just to try something different. I ordered some from the bay last year and never received them.

Yep. Just remembered something else- various fm breeds(silkie, cemani, several others) all had exactly the same Fm gene. In other words.. a silkie is as good as a source as much pricier fm breed. The cons are silkies have too many things to get rid of if one does not want the silk, leg feathering, crest etc.

ahh sorry that happened to you. general rule is avoid ebay for stock.. some sellers are good but there are so many horror stories it is not worth it.

also fm is generally not easy to breed for and maintain. as Kassaundra mentioned, a huge challenge are roosters that keep the dark skin past a year of age, much more of a challenge in projects. Hens are pretty easy.

Sorry for the "lingo" - but I see you've been answered already.

Yeah, I kinda don't want anything that comes with the Silkies - don't want silkied feathers, don't want leg feathering, not wanting a crest.....

(We need a less offensive term for gypsy face - I find myself not mentioning it because I don't want to call it that. I have a little 4 week old pullet with it like Snape has...)

I had black chicken soup in Singapore in a specialty soup restaurant. I can't vouch for the medicinal aspects, but it did taste sweeter. I liked it. (But I also just like the way they look - especially with naked necks)

I know two people I trust as sources for hatching eggs, one with Svart Honas, one with Ayam Cemanis. @Kev , are you aware of any differences for this purpose that I have missed? (I was thinking of getting AC hatching eggs from Phage...)
