Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Just set 34 naked neck eggs.
About a 1/4 of them are naked neck over a fibro silkie/giant cross.
Can't wait to see the results!

First day out of the nest 4 NN's out of the 9 eggs. 2 black, one white and one a very pale yellow.

So, I was cleaning brooders and looking over al the chicks this morning, and the smallest S&G NNS (the ones that aren't really growing and are scary small) are starting to act unwell, as is one of the other small chicks. (Sigh). All other chicks are hale and hardy - it's striking, as they are over two times as tall as these little ones. I was going to give them a chance to grow up with the rest, but if they are going to also be unwell, I'll need to just cull now (not going to guess/treat for anything, I need hardy resistant birds). I gave them all probiotics in the water, and will see if they perk up any, and decide tomorrow. I hate culling little chicks, but I think it's the right thing to do in this case.

Sorry, that sucks. I'm having the exact same problem with my chicks at the moment (not the NN's, other 5 week old chicks). They're not recovering and I know I need to cull them but I just can't bring myself to do it. Its's the first time for me dealing with sick chicks. I hope yours perk up soon.

Well that sucks. Culling chicks is the absolute worst. I culled one....and I'm hoping I never have to do that again. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they suddenly become healthy.

I figured out that it was probably ammonia - the brooder was yucky before cleaning. Not "out of control" yucky, but I'm thinking that it has caused issues for these predisposed chicks if they hunkered down in a yucky spot. Window by their brooder is wide open for the day to increase air movement (in addition to all dirty bedding gone). Maybe they'll do better. Looks like I'm going to have to clean that brooder more often - they eat more and therefore poop more. Hate cleaning brooders during the work week.

If it is, it's a new one on me. I'm used to sturdy bomb proof NN chicks. This S&G batch has been rough to deal with. I do think it's the rough start they had, but still.

I haven't been gone, I promise... I've been lurking, just a bit less...

Thorough update: Weather is above freezing! Parent stock birds were moved to the barn so that we could clean out the mobile coop (and let our garlic grow

). Batch #1 is now in our chicken tractors on grass... At 7 weeks old I'm impressed with their size and vitality. They are going to explode now. Batch #2 will remain inside the massive brooders (x2) until they hit at least 6-7 weeks. We are still going to get some cold weather and I don't want to chance it. About 2 weeks ago we had a small window of safe weather to do a controlled pasture burn and I reseeded our primary pasture. It is already turning green! Perhaps I'll make another egg-mobile with the new running-gear!

Egg-mobile and chicken tractors:

Batch #2 - @28 days - over 50 Nn in this hatch.

Keep the pictures and stories coming! Keeps me motivated... and keep Alf away from my cats!

Guess what?   Chicken butt!!   haha!  Sorry, I had to. :D     They do look very healthy and happy.

I would love to see a pic of that silkie/giant.  Never heard of such a cross.

And it was a white jersey giant over white silkies Lol!
Had a few fibro cockerels from that hatch last spring, only two pullets and only the one is fibro. I was going to take them both out before I started collecting eggs but then had the thought maybe I will get some fibro naked necks! So I left her.
