Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Georgiaboy also has fm naked necks, but do not think he has only fm.  My goal (though not yet achieved) is to have the main flock all fm

You both have some super cool looking birds!
Are you keeping your fm line bred? Or breeding them to non fm? If/when breeding to non fm how many % are hatching fm? How many generations later? Have you brought in any new fm or just working off your original?
Really hoping I get some fm out of this hatch, should know by Easter.

Thanks to those of you that piped in on the cockerel/rooster temperaments. Guess we'll see what hatches this weekend and if there's anyone that I just HAVE to keep.

Another question which I'm sure has been talked about here - two copies of the NN gene contribute to the NNs having no bowtie, correct? The eggs I got are from a flock full of NN/turken, and I think ONE bird actually has neck feathers. I really like the look of no bowtie so I'm kinda curious what my chances might be of getting chicks without bowties.

I really appreciate how forthcoming with info you guys are. You're all so helpful!

I probably shouldn't be responding to your inquiry because I'm seriously sleep deprived and will probably make no sense...and @Kev would no doubt answer it better, but what the heck...I'm feeling adventurous.

The naked neck gene is a dominant gene, meaning one copy is sufficient to produce the naked neck plus bow tie if you were to breed a homozygous NN (NANA) to a fully feathered bird of any breed. The offspring would come out as follows:

NAna = NN + bow tie
nana = fully feathered.

When you start crossing heterozygous NNs, you will get some that are fully feathered, some that are NN but with a bow tie of various sizes, and some that may be homozygous NN with little or no bow tie.

NAna + NAna = the following possibilities:
NANA homozygous NN with little or no bow tie
NAna heterozygous NN with bow tie
nana fully feathered bird

Does that make sense? I sure hope I don't wake up tomorrow to find out I embarrassed myself with my explanation.

I seldom ever bring anything new into my flock, except eggs or day olds. I have not brought any Fm into the flock in years (they aren't particularly easy to find especially w/o feathered legs!) so working w/ what I have. I have a strong base in Fm. I have about 1/3 of the flock fm, but I think several more carry but don't show (mostly the mottled ones). If I can ever get my gumption up to cull the girls a much bigger % of my flock would be fm.

I am nearly positive she is a girl now.  I only thought she was a boy b/c if she was birchen (like I thought) she had way to much white to be a female.  Since she obviously is not birchen I now think she is a girl.l

What would you call this colour? It's not birchen, not penciled, something in between

I've seen this before, and makes sense :)

So, in this scenario, if I'm remembering correctly and in a perfect storm - 25% NANA, 75% NaNa, 25% nana, yes?

I think most of the chicks she's hatched already have had bowties, so I'm probably looking at plenty with bowties (probably all). Oh well. It's not like I'm gonna stop with these chicks...

To clarify - it's rare that a Naked neck will be COMPLETELY bare necked. Even the NANA have a few feathers on the neck - the Nana have more, though, and more onto the chest.

These are some of my adult NANA ones:

And this is Khan, the only NANA I've hatched this year (the ones above looked like this as chicks):

And some NAnas:

I'm thinking this one may be a cockerel. The feathers seem heavy. I know it's still young but the past 2 I got that had heavy feathers were cockerels. I want to keep it, but I can't if it's a boy

Pictures help!

I went and looked back at her recent batch of chicks, and they do look more like your first set :) I'm good with that. Although no bowtie would send me to cloud nine!

Thank you!
