This one was kind of a surprise.. My turken hen must have layed in the nest with my already broody silkie hen. The silkie was on some guinea eggs, so they haven't hatched yet. The egg went unknowingly incubated! I candled all of the eggs yesterday and dicovered this one just in time. I put it on lockdown immediately in my incubator and the very next day...... POP!

It looks like it might have yellow feet, but this makes no sense, as the parents have white and slate feet. Maybe I got lucky with recessive?

What do y'all think?

Congrats! IIRC, yes yellow skin is recessive. Sex linked too?

Yellow legs is really just yellow skin either combined with Id, which inhibits pigments in a layer of skin on legs OR result of yellow skin and something else repressing that same leg pigmentation layer.. sex linked barring is one. It's why barred rocks have yellow legs- it's due to their having barring.. magically take away the barring, they will have black legs.

White legs is white skin plus the same skin inhibitors. Slate- white skin plus leg pigmentation.

WOW! how do you know ALL that? Is it like a dermis and epidermis? Anyway, It's all very intersting, and not to metion cool that you know things like that.

But this brings me to the question..... Black rocks? They have yellow feet and NO barring? Just thowing that out there. If there is some deep explanation that a stupid kid like me doesn't get, than that's OK.

Took a while to muddle through chicken genetics.. and no don't know everything!

And you know a thing or two too! Dermis and epidermis is it..

There are three 'main' ways to get solid black chickens. Black chickens with yellow legs usually are on eb(brown) with several genes that turn the body color into black.. this is the hardest way of making a solid black because it needs several genes for a totally black chicken, with no color leaking out anywhere. Those are uncommon.. and usually found only in breeds that require yellow legs like Wyandottes or Rocks. Naked Neck is an exception- black ones can have black legs(skin still supposed to be yellow.. can check by looking at soles). Good blacks with good yellow legs are pretty hard to hit on and are precious stock when achieved.. but often it's required to breed cock or hen lines.. because what makes the legs yellower on cocks makes the legs darker on hens, and vice versa.

Other black chickens usually are on E(black) or ER(birchen). I don't know if it is possible to have yellow legs on E(except by adding sex linked barring).. because it also puts pigments in the legs. Completely in dark if yellow is possible on black birchen.. (even E and ER need a couple melanizer genes to turn them solid black. A bit easier done than on eb though)

Here's a good example of how barring affects the leg color. The two hens are sisters, you can see how the non-barred one has black legs while her barred sister has yellow legs.. this difference is entirely due to barring in their case.

Thanks, it took about 5 generations to produce the barred naked necks, we cull alot on correct barring. We also have Blue, Splash, whites, blacks, Buff, Reds and working on speckled/mottled this is our 3rd generations for them. Finally have some nice Mottled birds. Raised way too many and gonna have about 150 birds for sale. Also have some blue barred birds available. We only are breeding acceptable correct colors never saw a blue barred in any breed. So there available...Frank @ Bayshore. will try to get some pics
