Naked Neck/Turken Thread

that cuckoo!!

Hi Nava!
ASOP says:
Neck: Medium in length; devoid of feathers, except for a permissible small tuft at front of neck nearly halfway down; skin very smooth.

I realize there is no NN pic in my book.
Kev, they are darling! All three are just fabulous!

I'll have Frizzle Naked Necks (blue, splash, black) in bantam and LF, brown-eggers and green-eggers WHEN AND IF these silly birds will start laying again.

I get the impression that totally bare necks are preferred but small bow ties are permissible like the ASOP says- '...except for a permissible small tuft...'. It is the ones with the honking big bowties with feathers covering the front of neck and crop that's the no-no for shows.

IMO both SMALL bowtie and no bowtie at all should be allowed and equally accepted but you are sure to get people who will disagree and insist on only no bowties being either acceptable or the ideal.

The 'problem' I see is that natural bare necks seem to be uncommon- birds with just one or 2 feathers in bowtie easily plucked off to look bare necked don't count as bare necks to me. Birds genetically pure for NN yet have small bowties are far, far more common, so to disqualify bowties would cut out a huge chunk of NN birds.

All of the show stock birds I got had bowties, none were bowtie-less. The only bare necks I ever got were in an egg trade, the birds were so obvious backyard mutts- crests, leg feathering etc yet several of those had and produced bare necks pretty easily. Go figure.....

tell me what you think? He'll be almost 6 months by the time the poultry show come around, will he be too young to enter?
and when I was told that about NN's I was very disappointed cause I was real proud of this little guy

I dabble in naked necks. I raise some of the red bantams, but do raise a lot because they do not show real well. The red naked necks I have are my most resilient of all my birds.
