Naked Neck/Turken Thread

KKHen, Are you saying your NN bantam eggs are nearly the same size as your NN LF eggs? Or did I misunderstand?

Well, that's what I said...but I am presently claiming a state of insanity.
big_smile.png
I went back and looked at pics of my LF barred NN with a bowtie's egg and it's definitely olive and the bigger of the two eggs. The other egg is slightly smaller and it's a light green, not olive at all. I set the light green egg...but why do I have a barred chick then? KEV! WHERE ARE YOU??!!

%#$*@!#!!! Before I send any eggs off with flower I'm going to have to sit down in the coop and watch to see which egg the little bantam hen lays so I get it right. . . . because right now I'm utterly confused!!

I also got my barred NN hen, although indirectly, from Kev's stock. Clearly I DON'T do this very often.

I'm here! Very tickled over the lav roo's name.... Kev didn't show any hint of barring when you got him but, just in case, how about current pictures? His side, showing especially the wing and tail feathers? Barring can be obscured on some colors, especially light colors as buff.. and lavender. It can also vary from clearly visible to minimally visible- some barred birds on pale colors will show a vague single white bar only on a few feathers. Are you seeing any white on him?

If he really is not barred, then the barred chick is from the LF hen and it is a boy because barring is sex linked- non-barred roo bred with barred hen gives you barred sons and non-barred daughters.

If he IS barred(I doubt it from how he looked when you got him), then it could be his and the bantam hen's.. and barring would not be sex linked in this case, both sons and daughters have a 50% chance of being barred.

p.s. are you submitting pictures for the calendar?

Hey! How are you?!! Glad to see you're back.

Here are some pics of Lil' Kev taken just yesterday. Now that you've mentioned it, I believe I see some barring...or else I'm tired.

He's not solid lav...he's got white and even a little yellow on his back. I went back to my pictures and I did set the correct egg because I have pics of the barred hens first egg and it is indeed olive.
Glad you approve of his name...you both sport the same silver cap

Yes Kev, I submitted this picture so far. I want to get a real good one of Lil' Kev now to submit.
You can only submit two so I want to make sure I get a nice crisp shot of him. I should have thought
about it first though, being a calendar a horizontal pic would work better. You've taken some nice
photos. Hope you send yours in!

Question for you keepers of naked necks- Do you all feel that these hens lay better in extreme heat? Do they forage more in the hotter parts of the day? Would consider getting some if they will lay through hot weather better than fully feathered hens.

What's hot weather? Something we see very little of here.....we are averaging under 70 degrees this July.

My NNs seem happy out in all weathers, but I guess we really don't see climate extremes here. They wander about much more than my Brahmas in the very cold.

I'm sure that someone will be able to give you a sensible answer, though.

With the additional areas for heat loss they should be good in all but the most brutal of temperatures.

I've no doubts they'll be fine, are there any provisions I should take for my naked necks come winter? The summers here in GA can get as high as 110*, but the winters have been known to get into the negatives, though rarely. I'm just paranoid, probably. ^^;

I'm super excited, though! My naked neck chicks should be arriving either Wednesday or Thursday, and I've got their brooder all set up and on a preliminary test run!

Tupperware bin + hardware cloth + reptile cage heat lamp = super cozy!

I do find my NN girls seeking shade with the others if it is real hot. I never really noticed what part of the day they are out running around foraging though. In the winter my girls did fine. It got pretty cold last winter and each time I would feel their necks, they would be nice and warm. I did find they hated snow! One day I had found them all on a bare spot where the snow melted and they were afraid to step back onto the snow to go back into the barn. LOL I had to carry them back!
