Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Please look at the following. I posted this in Emergency but wanted to post it here as well. I don't know if this is similar to KKH's problem or not :

So, I noticed a red spot on the back of one of the showgirls head. I thought maybe someone pecked her. It was a tiny red spot. Then after a few days the spot was getting larger only the red spot was still there, but the larger area looked like the skin was thickening around it. I didn't think much of it...was thinking it was the healing process. Today I noticed the "thicker skin" was in a larger area. I started checking the other chicks, and one other has the same tiny red spots on it's head, but there are several and no "thickening skin". Neither one of them is acting like anything is wrong, as of yet. The one with the thick skin does scratch it's head often though.

They have not been outside, and they have a little box of sand to play in that came from outside. The brooder had chicks in it before them, that had been in and out before I permanently put them outside. I am using an ecoglow, and they are on medicated chick feed. I am going to give them some save a chick, and I put neosporin on the spot on their necks/heads.

The first two pics are from the chick that had one spot, but now it is spreading like thick skin. The last pic is of another chick with the start of spots. I couldn't get clear photos, these are the best I could get. Any thoughts?

Oh dear, I have never seen anything like that before. The problem with KKH's as above as far as saturday had resolved but she had made the decision not to sell her eggs at the meet just to be on the safe side.

My chicks of the same age have been living outside since four weeks of age. I try to wean my chicks off of heat lamps cautiously but as quickly as possible. They really like the warmth but as a whole seem to do good for me if I do not keep them under the lamps for longer that four weeks and I do gradually introduce them to the sun. We have very high winds here in the desert and they need to adjust at some point.

But that is just me and it is curious that a similar problem is seen from one coast to the next. KKH lives at a higher altitude and it is colder up there.

Oh yes the skin on any trauma does thicken as part of the healing process.

Thank you so much Flower for responding I really hope the healing of their necks goes well and this will be over soon! I am hoping for nothing serious and the mystery goes away as quickly as it started. Someone brought up, the sand maybe irritating their skin?? I hadn't thought of that. Could they have rubbed their heads too much on the sand? Boy, I hope it is something that simple!!

homeschoolchick, so hard to say. The pics are fuzzy. The first pics look like pecking wounds. Of course, if they're scratching at the small sores it would eventually look like this too. When I speak of thickening of the skin, it's without any blemishes on the skin, just crinkly looking like a little kids elbows. That's the closest thing I can come up with! The bottom pic resembles more of what I have seen in my birds. Only one of my birds had the blisters/sores, the others had tiny red and/or uncolored dots that never turned into anything, they just went away.

Keep them under quarantine. Mine are healing on their own, no intervention.

Can't remember who was asking about bantam NN's. I have Lil' Kev's son. He's a barred pure NN that carries the gene for black and lavender. I have him in a pen with an assortment of bantam NN's, some frizzles. I just sold some eggs at the last meet up and gave the guy a discount if he'd send me some pics of them when they hatch. I'd love to see what kind of babies he makes. He's such a handsome bird! If I get the pics I'll share with ya'll. If they come out good I'd be happy to try to ship eggs. Can't be that hard!

I was up about 230 this morning and googled poultry/avion /chicken skin disorders/diseases all separate took over an hour I couldn't find any thing like this. Maybe its the sand/lights scratching etc. I would keep them separate and wait it out

Queenchick16- Wow! Thank you for the search!!! I had tried too, but not as in depth as you! Thank you! I have come up with nothing and so far no one knows

KKH- Yes, I wish the pictures were clearer. I took MANY, but none of them were good enough BTW-it was me talking to Kev about the eggs.

Thank you both for the ideas. They will be kept separate and I will remove the sand. I guess the scratching is probably why the one chick has that look of it spreading. The other one isn't scratching as much. I sure hope it clears up soon!!!

I have great news!!! I hope I am not speaking too soon, but it looks like the triple antibiotic cream is working. The areas are looking like they are clearing up already!! I wish I had tried it sooner
