Barred

Anyone know what colour this chick will be?

The top two(?) are either girls or a not pure barred boy. Bottom is a pure for barring boy. Barring has a dose effect, meaning there's a visible difference between birds pure and not pure for the gene. More white on pures, also can cause lighter down color like on his body. Maybe you have a pair or trio pure for barring!

This is what the breeder told me

We are using a Barred male & our hens are Barred, White & Red.

So if the male is barred, wouldn't all chicks be barred?

Yes - he is 100% NN - the girls are what is not 100%, but they are 99% (having Araucana bred into them 5 years ago for the coloured eggs).

That's a cutie for sure.   The bowtie size(yes the little fluffs) indicates she is pure for the naked neck gene..    Is that the brooder she's on?  Looks like an awesome set up if so.

the cage is actually one of my 2 reptile cages.it has a screen top to put the heat light on and space underneath for heat tape.i just use a 75wt bulb for a couple of days after they hatch to make sure they are all doing well and then they go outside to the big brooder.

Nice set up and handling of chicks. What reptiles? I love snakes, kept various local natives(gophers and kings) through my childhood years and one very very mean green iguana.

Males can be pure or not pure for barring, so it depends. That one lighter chick definitely is a male pure for barring, so he will throw 100% barred chicks no matter what color hen he's bred to. If one of the darker chicks turns out to be a male, he will not be pure for barring so he will throw both barred and not barred chicks.

Other then color at hatch or waiting to see if all their offspring are barred or not, if you don't know the parentage is there any way to know if they are pure for barring or not?

Has anyone ever had a chicken that looked like a bullfrog when it breathed while roosting?
I haven't had any abnormal symptoms with anyone, and the cockerel that is doing this seems all around fine. I just don't know why, when he breaths while roosting, his neck blows out a little. If he turns his head to tuck it in his wing, his neck puffs out like a small balloon is in there blowing up and then getting smaller...in and out ????? The little space of skin next to his nostrils puff up a little too. He doesn't have any noise when I listen to him breath, and he doesn't seem to be in distress. His comb is bright red, and he acts completely fine.

Oh Gee Homeschoolchick Your post makes for a funny scene. You do now that every bird is different so if that silly male is weird humm well I would not be very worried. They are curious creatures.
