Naming chicks

Hehe, I was pretty sure I wasn't the only person out there who wanted to name their chickens. We just got our six little (hopefully) girls the weekend before last. So far only two have names. The two Buff Oripingtons are Jeepers and Peepers, jeepers is slightly darker colored around her face. We also have a silver laced Wyandotte that Ive been alternating between calling sparrow b/c she kind of reminds me of a sparrow and lacee. I'm sure I'll come up with a proper name eventually. The three Astralorps dont have names though they are the easiest to tell apart.

In general reference to the chicks we either call them chickpeas or the peepers.

Aloha Kelidei,

You know the funny thing I do name my chicks too. I look, like you, for diverse personalities in my birds. I am no expert in telling the young males and or females at that age. But I do have a couple of method that suits me fine. I look at feet and listen to voices, also at feathering when they feather out and just have fluff on their heads left on them. I usually wait a month to determine males from females, but often it takes longer. But when i place a name to the bird, I like to coin it to the two parents that they are produced form. Males from the fathers name and girls from the mothers name. If they are bought chicks that is when i just give a name to the personality or look of the bird. But somes times the chick gets the name just by it's own merits of the chooks personality. So good luck on the name game, as I call it. Oh yes I like the name "Bitsy" for the little silkie runt, that is a cute name.

Thanks to BYC.com, I learned everything I needed to get started down the poultry path to eggvona.

We have the four hens, just for the house. They were of course named by the kids and are kept as pets, if not prolific pets.
We squired the birds a pullets so they never imprinted on us. They are easy going but I wouldn't say friendly.
If I were to do it again, I think I'd hatch or go day old.

The Kids went with a theme in naming the birds as others did. Can you guess what the theme is?

BO = Criton

RR = Pilot

RR= Dargo

BR = Pip

Yep, we name all of them the minute they hatch even if we plan on not keeping them. After we used all our favorite names, we started going through the baby name sites, sometimes trying different nationalities for entire hatches. Our last hatch of Seramas was all ancient Greek names

We are coming up with names for our chickens now - they'll be here in March but we figured we'd start now. We're going to name them using the first letter of the breed they are, hopefully that'll help us remember.

I am loving this thread! My other chickens--- the the big ones--- some have names and some don't. I have 9 dark cornish hens--- one is named Camilla (after the duchess of cornwall) she is the leader of the cornish contingent... of the 5 partridge rocks only two are named because they always hang out together... they are Molly and Polly. My white rock is Angel. My first BO is Buffy Marie and my first Black Australorp is Elvira or Ellie belle.The Gold Laced wyandotte with the single comb is Sweetpea. Three of my EE's are named Carmela, Gracie and Juliet. All the other girls are usually just called Mama bird ----My roos all have names:

Blue Andalusian= Capt'n Jack (Jack)
BO= Cletus (Clet)
BA= Clement (Clem)
EE= Romeo
RIR/Wyandotte cross= Rufus
Columbian Wyandotte/White rock cross= Cyprian (Cyppie)

You all are very inspiring!
