Naming chicks

Aloha Kelidei,

You know the funny thing I do name my chicks too. I look, like you, for diverse personalities in my birds. I am no expert in telling the young males and or females at that age. But I do have a couple of method that suits me fine. I look at feet and listen to voices, also at feathering when they feather out and just have fluff on their heads left on them. I usually wait a month to determine males from females, but often it takes longer. But when i place a name to the bird, I like to coin it to the two parents that they are produced form. Males from the fathers name and girls from the mothers name. If they are bought chicks that is when i just give a name to the personality or look of the bird. But somes times the chick gets the name just by it's own merits of the chooks personality. So good luck on the name game, as I call it. Oh yes I like the name "Bitsy" for the little silkie runt, that is a cute name.

Bitsy is hysterical... s/he is so small but isn't intimidated by the bigger ones...s/he will push their way right past the the others to get to the fresh food when I put it down.

I have four kids who want everything named, so yes- we named all 12 of our chicks. They are (in some cases were) Lily, Sassy, Chicken Parm, Ahsoka, Sadie, Hermione, Harry Potter, Hedwig, Yoda, Sparrow, Magnolia, and Annabelle. The kids favor naming them after movie/book characters. Annabelle & Sadie were names we liked but never used for children. We are getting 9 more in April and the kids are already choosing names.

Here is Bitsy with friends--- they were having a party outside the brooder for the first time

I dont name my chicks until I am sure I am going to keep them. My Willow (silkie) who passed away this summer (9 yrs old) answered to her name & ran to me when I called her. I named her after a willow tree in our back yard. I have a white frizzle Grace because her feathering reminds me a of an x mas tree top angel. Luna (silkie) because of her clear buff coloring reminds me of the glow of a full moon, Violet my blue cochin, Shelby (silkie) because she came from Shelby county, Tennessee, Betty (silkie) & Veronica (silkie) because my first record when I a kid was Sugar Sugar by the Archies from the back of a Super Suger Crisp cereal box back in 1969. Brooklyn girl (australorp) just because I grew up in Brooklyn & wanted chickens since I was 9 years old & last but not least my rooster Presley (silkie) because he is the king!

The names just come to my family. We have 36 chickens
