Naming your coop

My first chicken is names Brandy. Now I have nine. We live in the country and my husband calls my "chicken hobby" a ministry. I named our coop "Brandy's Country Chicken Chapel". I don't have a sign.......yet.

I am working on my sign. My coop and run is going to be called "Cackleberry Cottage". We just returned from Fredericksburg, Texas. The main street has tons of fun shops. There was a shop called "Henfeathers". I thought that was a neat name!

My coop has become such a resort for my hens... (It hit 116 yesterday and 115 today) that I've decided I'm going to have to put in an air cooler for the girls... that or a better fan system.

I'm painting a sign that's going to say "Cluck Med" on the front of the coop. BTW we just painted our coop but I can't get the pics to upload.

Thanks to everyone for posting about your coop names. I've yet to choose a name because I wanted something that represented the life of the person who is making my chicken and duck dreams come true.

My grandmother died last September at the age of 87. She and I weren't close throughout my life because my father -her son- never really allowed us to get to know each other.... it's a long story. So I find out that my grandmother is terminally ill last summer. I received a call in September that she had very little time left so I made arrangements to fly from Seattle to Western NY so I could see her one last time. I got to the airport at 9:45pm to take the red eye to NY and got a call from my husband just as I'm leaving the ticket counter telling me that my grandmother had died. She knew I was coming and still she died. I was a mess- I sat right down where I was standing on the floor in the airport and began to sob uncontrollably over the loss of this relationship I never had and this woman I never really got to know. I've worked in funeral service for some time and know these things happen but it's different when you are directly connected to the person is terminally ill or has just died.

I still fly out to NY and spend a lot of time with my uncle, aunt, and cousins. We talk openly about my grandmother and her life; we also talk about her feelings toward me and my sister. My uncle informed me that my grandmother left my sister and I some inheritance. I was so surprised! I had no idea that she would do something so generous (she left my father nothing) though we'd never been close.

It took me some time to decide what to do with the money. I wanted to do something with it that would honor her memory and last a lifetime; I also knew that she would want me to do something with it that I would truly enjoy. My husband and I just purchased our first home in April of this year so I was going to put the money towards house stuff. Then something told me to use the money for something for myself -which I never do- so I decided to start raising chickens and hopefully sell eggs in the future. I love animals and I've always wanted to have my own business so after thinking about it for awhile, I told my husband my plan. He was fine with it and began to draw up plans for the coop. Meanwhile, we purchased 4 chicks from the local feed store co-op and so it began.

I've considered my grandmother in every decision I've made from chicks to lumber for the coop. Finally the coop is primed and will be painted tomorrow. All it needs is a name.....

Lydia,

What was your Grandmother's name or what did you call her? Maybe you could start with that. Your story is touching. I was thinking, "The Grand Coop" or "Coop de Grand". How about "Gifted Chickens" or "Granny's Gifted Chickens"? Just thinking on the keyboard....

My grandmother's name was Rebie and she lived in Chautauqua County in New York (Jamestown). I called her Grandma Rebie.

My husband suggested Chautauqua County Extension since we live on the opposite side of the country and this would be a little extension of her out here on the Left Coast.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions- It's time to head out to start painting the coop!
