Nankin Discussion Thread

My daughter is now the proud mom of two sweet Nankins from franciscreek. We are wondering what type of housing is suggested for these little bantams? We currently have LF egglayers and silkes in a divided coop (one half for each). Just wondering how we can adapt our coop to meet the Nankins needs?

The coop is a walk in, 8x16 with an attached 10x15 fenced run with netting. We can add a seperate run for the Nankins.

I just thought I would let everyone know that Ideal Hatchery has the Nankin Bantams for sale. They have both the rose comb and the single comb.

Most of the ideal birds I have seen are on the large side and lack type. Id go with a breeder that has quality birds.

4 of my Nankin babies! I wanted to hatch some before advertising my hatching eggs. I am now selling hatching eggs, $35.00 a dozen, $25.00 a half dozen, POSTAGE INCLUDED. Is that reasonable? The parents of all my eggs came straight from Lund Poultry and Mary Ann Harley (I bought them last spring as chicks). I have 3 pens of SC (1 roo to two or three hens), and only one pen of RC right now with one roo and two hens. My other RC pen has Cochins in it too, so I'm not selling those eggs right now, as they may be mixed breed chicks. I also have 3 Silkies...one black roo, one white hen, one buff hen. I have pictures of them and of their babies as well if you'd like to see them. I have not shown any of my birds, but my Nankins come from excellent stock. There are pictures of them earlier in this thread. I incubated 10 bantam eggs, one candled clear at 10 days, all 9 others hatched healthy, strong, lively chicks! 4 Nankins, 4 Silkies, 1 Cochin or Cochin/Nankin mix. This was my first hatch ever. I have not done Nankin x Silkie, that would be interesting! Right now I am focusing on breeding pure. I want to contact a 4H group and see if they want some Nankins to help promote the breed. My extra roosters from Lund and Mary Ann last year went to a lady that knows some 4H kids. I plan to set up another pen for the Black Cochin Bantams, but haven't gotten there yet. My little one that came out of the run that has both Nankins and Cochins looks like a black Nankin. I already sold all of the bantams, so no idea what it will look like as an adult. The buyer wanted the birds as pets so didn't care if it was a cross. My Nankin roo and my Cochin roo that are in that pen together get along fine, no fighting. But I'm not trying to cross breed, I just need to build one more pen and run. My incubator and a batch of hatching eggs are heading off to my friends second grade classroom this coming Tuesday. She has lesson plans developed and the kids are all so excited! I figured I might as well share the fun . And I get all the chicks back to sell. One of our local feed stores has a buy/sell/trade once a month starting in April. I plan to try to sell some birds there. And people don't sell their birds cheap there either! We shall see how that goes.

I do really like my Lund birds. Mary Ann's too, but the Lund birds, especially the RC's, are SUPER friendly. That's a Lund boy sitting on my daughters shoulder in my profile picture. Part of that could be because they were our first batch and got handled a lot, but regardless, they are super sweet and friendly. If I were to order more birds, I wouldn't hesitate to order from Lunds.

My incubator is now in my friends' second grade classroom with 26 eggs. Half of those are Nankin eggs. I candled them yesterday, at day 7. ALL are developing! I am so happy, and the kids are all so excited! The kids all got to see an embryo moving in an egg. The eye was very visible. It was like magic to them! Then the teacher went and got the principal and assistant principal. They were the two biggest kids! "Wow!" "That is so cool!" LOL. Next Friday my daughter and I will be taking some birds into the classroom for a presentation for the kids. The following Tuesday is hatch day, but I had a few hatch the day before last time, so they could get some on Monday.

One of my RC girls was egg bound the other day and died . I was very upset. That leaves only one female in that pen with the roo. I am keeping an eye on her because I'm afraid the roo will breed with her too much and hurt her. Is that a legitimate concern? I'm going to keep my RC Nankins from the school hatch so in a couple of months there will hopefully be a few more girls to add to the pen.
