This may be a boring question but did he say "why" he wanted chickens? Is he interested in eggs? Just wants to keep up or jump ahead of the Jones'? Wants the most different looking chickens he can afford? (a breeding pair of Ayam Cemanis can set him back $5000) Chickens can live for a long time if well cared for, in a year is he going to say enough of that? Chickens can be messy and smelly (again if the coop is not well maintained) and they can wreck landscaping. If you want the kids to stay interested you might want kid friendly - Orpingtons, Cochin, Barred Rocks (also good for eggs). How old are the kids?

Don't get me wrong they are lots of fun and the eggs are a bonus, but ownership probably shouldn't be taken lightly and just for the latest trend. There are lots of good books out there and websites, sounds like you had better start reading! :) You have come to the best resource right here, though!
