Native American Heritage Anyone?

Chippewa , Ottawa, Pottawatomie and then some Cherokee on my Grandmothers side ...... It's been diluted a lot though. My mom does all of the Genealogy.... she'd know the brass tax of it.

I am 1/2 German (my mom is German - born and raised) and my paternal great grandmother was supposedly full blood indian (which would make me 1/8) but they hid her identity then - and I cannot get any records on her now (the building that housed her birth records burned 100 yrs ago). According to census reports I believe she was born in Indiana - 1868(if my memory serves me right). Anyone have any idea what tribes would have been around there? I am still trying to figure out a better way to track all this down....
very cool thread!!

One thing you can do, is go back and print out the page on which her census info was recorded. Call or email the county clerk of the county in which she lived. They should know or hook you up with a county historian, that can tell you the different tribes or NA with mixed heritage that lived in her area. Back then people of different ethinic groups lived all in the same area. Be sure to included all the info up at the top of the register, that gives the exact location, in which she lived in that county. Good luck.

1/2 Cherokee and proud of it!!
My paternal grandparents are full and my father as well, my mother is....I dunno, lol..a white woman...

My old man always calls me squaw, lol!

Tells his friends "that's my squaw"
Calls out to me "get in here squaw!!"

It used to irritate me, but now I just ignore it.

Oh, and I want to recommend a good book to read, mostly for those not of native heritage interested in knowing some facts of the "old days"

It's called "Bury my heart at wounded knee"

I cried when I read that book, not only because of the content, but there is a photo in it that looks exactly like my grandfather!

here are some pics of me --The first is just a webcam shot 3 or 4 years ago--The second is aformal picture in my mid thirties- and the last is a couple of weeks ago. If these don't put your eyes out, can you look at me and tell that I have NA blood? Just curious- Also my pics just prove that ugly comes in all flavors

My hair is still long ( and a lot of gray now ) but in the last pic is pulled back-- the way I usually wear it. I usually wear it in a bun not a ponytail- weird but true

For Cherokees or anyone interested Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver. Also Mountain Windsong a novel of the trail of tears by Robert J Conley. Both will make you cry like a baby. I couldn't sit through my 5th grade history lesson without breaking down. Everyone just stared. We were always called dirty halfbreeds when I was little. Then people wonder why a mixed blood would choose to keep their mouth shut. Happy heritage hunting. By the way this month is National Native American Heritage month
