Native American Heritage Anyone?

I was always told we were part Black Dutch, which I took to mean someone from the Black Forest area....lol....Years later I started having reaccuring dreams of Native American women, this got me digging into Native American history. I found out that those individuals that claimed to be Black Dutch during the removal, were really of mixed European/Native Americans. So I started questioning my older relatives, and that's when I found out I had Native American ancestry. When I told some of my other relatives from my dad's side, found out that I had more on my dad's side too. Once I got a computer I started working on my family tree, and was able to make the connections, and was surprised to find out that I had several ancestors laced here and there, all thru out my family tree, during different time periods. Also found out that some of my early American ancestors were Quakers that literaly came on the same ship with William Penn to be apart of the "Holy Experiment".....and a bunch of other neat stuff, would totally derail the thread to go into...lol.

I'm so glad to hear about the "Black Dutch." One of my grandmothers gave that as her heritage and someone said it was
French and Dutch. She had beautiful black hair and features that looked neither Fr. nor Dutch. My Grandfather was half Cherokee and he knew all the old medicines. I wish I had listened more. Oh, and my son is also Blackfoot.

As I was reading some more of these posts. I also remembered that the female elder also said that the terms "black Dutch" and "Black Irish" were used by people a lot to cover their Native American ancestry. Most people now are very proud to find NA ancestry in their family tree. But times were different way back when and even if someone was aware of NA ancestors , Many probaly didn't advertise that fact or maybe even explained it away or flat out denied it. I don't blame them because they had to do what they needed to get by. Times were different then. I am so glad nobody has to be ashamed of their heritage anymore. Many "white" people are even finding African American ancestors in their background. Of course years ago this would have been something that would be covered up as deep as possible. Thank God now we can stand up and be proud of our heritage --No matter what it is. I am proud to be who I am --No matter what went in the mix to make me!!

I am Cherokee and Choctaw and sorry that man was so rude not all Native people are that way. Most of them are happy to share how they do things or make things. The only sad things is I am the one that ended up with the darker brown hair not the black like mama and green eyes and not brown like mama. I am glad my daughter came out with my skin tone unlike my husband who is cherokee and wyandotte he is white as a ghost and burns so bad.
 
Oh WoW, this is so cool! Finally someone I can ask about this stuff. Btw, I am 1/8 Apache and Irish. That's all I know at this point.

My Dad died when I was 8 and everyone on my mom's side is gone. When Dad died my mom didn't keep in contact with his side of the family. So I have no idea where any of them might be. I only know the names of his brothers and sister (not her last name). Both grandparents are gone too. I don't even know my grandmothers maiden names either.

My question is this... how on earth can I find out anything? I don't even know where to start. Right now it seems I'm the elder in the family at 51 and this is something I would really like to do before it's too late. Something to leave my family with would be cool. Don't you think?

I'm sure there's no hope for me with this project. But any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone, for any help you can give me.

For anyone interested in their genealogy, I had only gone back to 1700 on any of my lines in 20 years of traditional research. When I got a computer and internet I found a few sites and ended up going back to biblical times. For Cherokee, All Things Cherokee was cool. Ancestry, OneGreatFamily, MyHeritage,LDS Family llibrary. Most will give you a free trial to get started. Mind you some are better than others, so shop around. And good luck!
