Nebraskans Speak Up!!! NEBRASKA ROCKS!!

I noticed the donkeys getting terribly wooly too. They alpacas, well, they're always wooly.

Wet wet wet wet.....and the FOG! I know there is sky up there somewhere.
Yeah the mud is unreal. My poor chickens' feet are just caked in mud. I have been throwing feed bags in the runs so they can walk on them instead of the wet ground. It doesn't take long for them to get buried in mud though... yuck

I've been using those bedding pellets. They swell when wet and mix with the dirt, but the upside is they dry really quickly making a nice dust bath consistency material, easy to compost. Which reminds me. I need more.
I think I saw someone selling something like that on Craigslist, I'll have to go check. Sounds like a good idea!

Spent the whole day winterizing. It's about two weeks early, but Mother Nature dictates the calendar on the fridge, not the other way around. Sigh.

Going to freeze tonight. The irrigation is off and drained, coop panels are up, hoses drained, waterer heater hooked up. I'm just not mentally ready. Although, if it hardens up this mud.... LOL.

I so wasn't prepared for freezing this soon, I still have chickens in outside pens. I lost 2 today, but they were in the insulated coop so I'm very nervous as to how my flock will do once winter DOES arrive.
I am taking a week off work and building a new coop, more like fixing up an old machine shed so it can house chickens. Hoping everyone will get along, nobody wanted my chickens I put up for sale so they have to learn to get along or sleep outside haha

I hear that so often, but winter always has a large death toll. I can never figure it out, my coops are draft free, but ventilated at roof level. I have large 150lb feeders which never run empty too. The coops are built in a fairly protected area between two giant barns and trees behind them.
This year I'm going to try letting them outside on days above 25° to see if that gets me any better results. Maybe 7th winter with chickens is my lucky number?
