Nebraskans Speak Up!!! NEBRASKA ROCKS!!

huh Interesting. mine have been to -20' and I've had no deaths. Mine free range all day as long as it is not terribly windy and cold at the same time. Otherwise they just spend all day hiding in the barn, pooping.

what are you feeding?

The previous years I've fed Layer feed, this year I'm only doing Flock Raiser with oyster shell provided separately. The breeds that died were my Orphingtons, Faverolles, silkies, Japanese, Rhode island reds, Brahmas, and a few mixed breeds. This year I have Jersey Giants, Orphingtons, Isa Brown, Super Blue Egg Layers, Ameraucanas, Polish, Houdans, Silkies, Frizzles/Sizzles, Cochins, Japanese, Belgian Quail Danvers, and mixed breeds.
I use heated waterers also, if that matters.

Odd. Hearty breeds. Plenty of scratch? And grit?

Infeed high protein in winter. 18% to make up for lake of bugs. And veggies and fruit scraps.
I have never fed scratch in my life, what's the benefits and how do you feed it? And I've only given grit to my pullets and cockerels the first few months, not full time. Should I?

Cracked corn not gives them something to do all day, hunting and pecking like their nature demands, given two hours before bed, especially on cold days, fills their crops with carbs so they can keep warm through the night. It is actually fuel for them to survive.

Grit must be given through their whole life. It's the stones in their crop that grind the food so they can digest it. Without it, they are eating, but starving to death.

7 degrees and snow?! Seriously!?

That's it, I'm turning up the heat and opening the windows. (kidding)
At least the rest of the week will be decent temperature wise.
