Honestly I've wanted a Frizzle since I first joined this forum. LOL I know its not a breed, I just think that they are so adorable. But I kind of like unusual animals. I love my little Ameraucanas. But I happened upon them by accident, really. They are so curious about everything. One has just started laying, and I'm expecting the other two to start any time. Love the blue eggs mixed in with my browns, whites and pinks.

I do know, as cold as we get here that I want a nice sturdy bird that will handle the cold. But just would love to see all the different breeds that are around. If you'd have told me 10 years ago, that I was going to get into having chickens, I'd have said you were nuts. LOL

It will be really cool to meet some people from BYC as well.

Thanks so much for keeping us newbies up to date with the shows! It is very much appreciated!

No problem! I love seeing people getting interested in poultry! I grew up the daughter of an avid poultry breeder and shower and left home to go to college and travel overseas and left behind growing up on a small farm and being around animals. It really is true you can't take that kind of raising out of a person. The longer I was away, the more it started gnawing at me that it was where I belonged....so couple years ago I moved from Minneapolis where I'd been for 10 years and dove back into poultry again. Good thing there are just some things ya never forget.

I'm happy to help when I can with shows, and breed info and do from time to time have birds for sale as well. And yes! I can't wait to connect with people I've talked to on here at shows. That really is one of the best part of the shows...all the poultry talk with people. I was just talking with my parents the other day about some of the crazy stories from shows and of the characters that have since passed away or had to get out of poultry for health reasons. They are one of a kind and make no apologies for it! I love it. Of course...there's always bad apples, but they certainly don't spoil the rest.

Wow, that's awesome! Back to your roots, so to speak. My dad was a farmer, but by the time I was born, they had moved to town, and he started his own TV repair shop, and farming supplemented his income. So I got the farming part, but not the livestock or poultry experience. My husband was raised around all of it, so its totally natural to him.

In the 22 years we've been married, I've learned a lot. (and been in a lot of situations that I never would have otherwise) LOL

Most memorable would have to be pulling piglets out of a mean sow.

Now that was an experience!

Hi all. I'm Palaidnis, and I raise chickens.

Actually, I would almost say I'm an old hand, since we've had backyard birds for six years now. Inspired by my daughter's experiences at Prairie Hill summer camps, and memories of my grandparents' house down near 10th and Claremont in the Bottoms, we decided to raise some hens. We started off with a half dozen Cochin banties - but an astounding 5 of 6 were boys. Though the sound of them passing through puberty was amusing, they found a new residence at a friend's acreage. In their place we added a pair of Rhode Island Reds. A few years later, as they passed away, we went with a pair of sex-link production birds. Now that those matriarchs have gone to the great nestbox in the sky, we've gone bonkers and added an Amaracuana (Easter-Egger), a Silver Tipped Wyandotte, two more Reds, and another black cochin bantie. They share the house with a myriad of other beasties -- a dog, cats, rats, a mouse, fish, crawdads, frogs, plus all the other standard urban yard visitors.

I've joined the forum to see how active and extensive the scene is around Lincoln and Omaha.

Looking forward to meeting you all!

I haven't ever made it to that sale. It always falls on a weekend I have something going. I have heard some people just love it and others could leave it. I think it all depends on whether you are selling and what it is you are selling or if you are there to just buy. I wouldn't mind trying to get to that one finally

Hello,
welcome-byc.gif
Palaidnis!

The activity on this thread can be kind of spotty at times, but there are quite a few people around that raise poultry on different levels. One of the best ways to tap into some of the people that are pretty into raising poultry is to try to head to one of the two poultry shows in the state. There is one coming up this Nov in Lincoln at the Lancaster Event Center on the first weekend of that month. The other is not until April of Next year I believe. Quite a few of those that show are more old school and don't tend to have websites or get on the forums.

Hey all. Sorry to have been MIA for so long. Hope everyone is doing well.

Bird Question...
Tonight I came home and my son had let the girls out to roam. I went out to talk to them, drink a beer (long day of jury duty) and do some yard stuff. I noticed that Sophia our BO big girl's right wing looks out of place. No trauma that we are aware of, not sure what could have happened. No outward puncture, it just is hanging lower than it should the top of the wing does not look set in the joint as the left is.

I suspect dislocation, although I could be wrong.

I am a WUSS and have such a hard time dealing with this side of being a chicken mom. I don't want to hurt her. She laid an egg today. IS totally possible that the injury happened post egg, but she seems otherwise normal scratching around the backyard, sharing popcorn with my son.

I have read on forums about binding the wing into a more natural position. Will have to wait for my hubby to come home for an extra set of hands, but does anyone have experience with this? I am going to head back out to the backyard and take a pic to post for your opinions.

Thanks in advance for your always awesome advice and suggestions.
