Hey Denise! Good to see you, but sorry to hear about Sophia... from what I can see in the pics its looking like a dislocation. If she's laying I'd say it wasn't a bad dislocation with tearing or anything, but would definitely try setting the wing in a natural position and see if the hubby can help you wrap it in place and leave it for a few days. I've heard people have great success with it. I haven't had any I've had to wrap luckily, but it is a good first step to try. Just keep an eye on her to make sure she is eating easily enough and isn't getting picked on or vulnerable to predators. I'm sure she'll be fine!

Thanks Gilavina!!! I was hopeful that it wasn't a break when I first looked at it. I really need to toughen up, but man I am such a softy. I told my son that Soph was hurt (she is his chicken) and he started crying. He is a softy too.

Thanks for the help.

Denise

P.S. The garden has become the lost home for chickens. We keep getting 4-H hatch cast offs.

They started laying a few weeks ago. I think that when we assess the situation this spring I will want to add to my flock at home (1) and perhaps some at the garden. We haven't forgotten you. I am trying to decide what I want to do about my coop. Keep what I have or build something a little more perm. We shall see.

no problem! i hope she heals up quickly! i kind of wondered if the garden wouldnt end up collecting the 4h birds.... i used to have people try to give them to me all the time. then id have to find homes for them....now i just give them the name of someone thats told me they were lookin for birds and it saves me lots of feed and time.

ill still be raisin birds, so anytime you get to where you've sorted out what you want to do and etc and we'll figure something out.

My husband helped me with Sophia last night. Unfortunately, the night I noticed it I had to spend 2 1/2 hours with my son in the urgent care for a stinking virus that upset his asthma a bit. Anyway...last night my husband looked at her with me. He knows nothing about chickens but is no where near the wuss that I am. He actually popped it back in and we wrapped it. I heard the pop. EWWWWW. Anyway, it is in a much more natural position and is wrapped in place.

Thanks for the support.

Oh no....you're kiddo got hit by the nasty bug goin around eh? That's too bad! I hope he gets to feeling better really soon

That is fantastic that your DH got the wing to pop back in! That will make the healing process so much better for Sophia! I can't wait to hear how she is doing when you go to check on how she is healing up!

Thought I'd update a bit. I've been frantically working on the coop getting it ready for winter. Hinged all the windows and got them installed, made the exterior nest box and got it attached to the coop. (have to put the siding back on yet) and sealed up all the areas that would cause drafts. Whew! This stuff is work. LOL But enjoyable work too. Still have to get the pop door made and installed.

With this being our first year ever having chickens .. and! not really knowing what sw NE winters are like, I worry about what this winter has in store for us. We moved from an apartment in nc IL (McHenry Co that borders the Wisconsin state line) to sw NE the first week of May, so you'd think even with having the big blizzard last winter and numerous days below 0, winter here would be no big deal on our part .. but we've heard about the ice! lol
They say this winter for everyone in the US is going to be bad. Just thinking about it ... Brrrrrr!

I have to ask, because I thought about it before .. do you think egg color with the Easter Eggers is based on the bird's coloring? We have two. Marilyn is more like a light tan (golden eagle like), Manson has a brown body with black-ish head (like a hawk). The eggs from one are olive green, and the other's are pastel-ish greenish grey. I was hoping one of them would have blue

I really didn't think finding straw for sale out here would be difficult nor expensive. In IL it was used for bedding, insultation for pipes and buildings, after planting grass seed, and decoration. Typical farmer prices were $2-$3.50 a small bale at no less than 45 lbs. Average is 65 lbs.

Out here I'm hearing $4 at auction. Wow!
We helped a neighbor move some after she offered us some of her straw, they maybe felt like 35 lbs.
I understand out here it's fed to livestock.

Even the hubby is excited to go. So we are both anxious about it. LOL

You can expect milder winters where you are. The cut off line seems to be about Grand Island for some reason. LOL I used to live close to Ogallala, and the winters out there were so much more mild than this direction. I'm in Fremont now. We get all the moist air out here. You will still get cold out that direction, but not near the ice and snow that we get on this end of the state. Lucky girl! LOL

Good good!! Don't forget that there will be sale coops full of pretty birdies just waiting to go home with you....so might want to bring a carrier or something just in case.

Its the Western National Wyandotte Meet so I think that it should be a decent size show. Luckily Wyandottes are one of my all time favorite breeds
