Good idea about that softened water. I know the Culligan man told us not to use it on houseplants because the sodium content is too high, so I got an RO system, cuz I am on low sodium diet. Houseplants got my drinking water! My chicks get well water at my new place.

To me there seems to be a misunderstanding of 'bad vaccines' in this. If the breeder flock got a 'bad' batch it would simply be ineffective. It would not cause the disease. It would leave the hens unprotected so that if exposed by the disease they would come down with it. IF they came down with it in a time of lay when the eggs are gathered for hatching an outbreak could occur.

This is a live vaccine and must be used at 6 to 18 weeks of age. At that age there are no eggs yet anyway so no chance of transmission. With all live vaccines there is a chance of failure if the vaccine is handled improperly. Storage in shipping, before and during use is very important.

I will not rule out the fact that my dx may be incorrect, anything is possible, however; after speaking to the vet and reading the stories so many people are posting about their chicks, I don't believe this is an issue of softened water, or excessive electrolytes or any other thing that people are trying to blame this on. I have lost 20 of 50 chicks to a DISEASE, mostly isolated to particular breeds, with the apparent transmission to some chicks of other breeds. Remember, the most important piece of evidence, that these sick chicks are isolated to hatches from one breeder, during a particular two week span. My chicks did not become ill because of any thing I did wrong, it was out of my hands. The old adages "if the shoe fits" and "if it quacks like a duck" seem appropriate. The person who tested their chix positive for AE, and got their chix from MMH, could have contracted the disease somewhere else, sure, but when this many people from this many states have the exact same situation, it doesn't take me long to hear the quacking.

It is irresponsible to assume that everyone with sick chicks has chicks with AE.

I urge you all to take your chicks and have a necropsy done and get your own very specific diagnosis.

It is the right thing to do and the only way you can be sure of what is causing YOUR chicks to be ill.

Maineiac, actually you have lost your chicks due to a virus, not a disease. If you actually read through the posts this virus can be contracted through hen to egg so the breeders hens could have gotten this from some off site carrier and the breeders would not have even really noticed it since for adult birds it is just a drop in egg production. In Iowa that is normal for winter time. I went for almost 3 months without an eggs due to our screwy weather. These are then sent to places to be hatched and unknowingly take the virus with it. MM would have had NO IDEA that there was a problem at the time of hatch and they do not keep chicks around to watch for the heck of it. They are all sold. They have done thier part by offering replacements or money back to those who have called and stayed FRIENDLY. Quacking like a duck has nothing to do with what is going on. I for one after reading these would not bend over to the costomers that act in this manner. There could be several things that cause this and even though it is probable that AE is the cause, if you dont have your birds tested they you can not say for a fact. AND PLEASE do not DISRESPECT OUR MODS!!!!!! Nothing was said to anyone in paticular but you took it to heart and returned a very rude and uncalled for attatude. maineiac, please feel free to share the results of your own personal necropsy stating your chicks have this illness. When do you expect the results from your lab?

I took my 3 worst chicks to the Avian vet today, and dropped them off.
she plans to euthanize at least one, maybe all. Do a necropsy on at least one and send out tissue samples.
I will keep people posted as I know things.
She did say that most mortality for AE is in chicks under 4 weeks of age.
She also thought that if I went 2 more weeks w/o chicks getting sick that would be a good sign for the rest of my chicks.
that is all I know for now.
