Necropsy Guidelines

One of my chickens died a couple weeks ago and I had my vet send her in for an necropsy at UC Davis. I want to know why my chicken died also. I guess they do a very thorough investigation into why the chicken died and it takes a while. My vet told me it takes about a month to get the preliminary results and another couple months to get the final results of all the testing they do.
Thanks. I just sent another hen in this summer and definitely satisfied with the thoroughness of the report from UC Davis

Well, according to FedEx shipping, the carcass may have sat in a truck or warehouse (?) until about 12 hours after I dropped her off. There were just two small (those blue blocks... 6 inches-ish?) ice packs without insulation in the box and it was in the 90’s here yesterday. I hope they can still get good culture samples. Bridge was a little off this morning and it’s going to get close to 100° here today. Sigh.

Hope that they can still do the testing. Yes timing is important on sending the body. Taking the body personally is the best thing, but not practical for some. Then, overnight shipping via UPS or Fedex with the ice packs is preferred. Many states will email a shipping label for that, and that can decrease the cost if you pay for shipping on your own. I live about 3 hours from my state vet, and about an hour from Fedex, so I have yet to get a professional necropsy.
