We just got a necropsy back for our chicken. It says the results were inconclusive and that she was very thin. Does anyone know what could have caused this? I feel bad that we could have helped her and done more.

She ate all the 20% protein feed all time and we gave her eggs to help bulk her up because we knew she was thin. We had dewormed her and recently given her an antibiotic because we were worried about internal laying.

Gross Examination
A reportedly 4-5 year old Cochin chicken was submitted for necropsy 1/6/25. The bird was in fair post-mortem condition and was
thin with a prominent keel, poor muscling, and fair internal adipose. The conjunctiva and mucus membranes were pale pink. There
was feces matted around the vent. There was scabbing over the keel. The crop contained a small amount of soft yellow/tan feed.
There was good grit in the ventriculus. The small intestine contained tan viscous fluid ingesta and there was soft feces in the ceca.
The ovary was inactive. The liver had miliary pale foci scattered evenly throughout. The spleen was markedly enlarged with
prominent pale/white 1-2mm foci throughout. The ovary was inactive.
Gross Diagnosis
Muscle atrophy/weight loss
Liver: Open
Spleen: Open
Comments
The cause of death is uncertain based on the gross examination.
Sampling protocols used for necropsy specimens include one or more of the following: KAHDL PA SOP-3 and KAHDL PA
SOP-4.

Just to add: We thought she was eating but maybe she was just pretending to do so. She died at night so I'm surprised there wasn't more food in her crop. Her droppings were always green and yellow and runny. We had also given them corid in case it was cocci.

I would assume old age. The average lifespan of a Chicken is between 5-10 years, but it may vary somewhat amongst individuals.
