Necropsy photos: Any input?

The edges of the liver look dark too:

Yup, they were. Almost black.
The back half of the liver looked really dark, almost black.

Is the final verdict that he had an impacted gizzard which led to intestinal issues (infection?) as the cause of death?
Prevention would be providing grit, right?
The liver problem could be from E.Coli. The owner said his water was like this for a bit.
