Need a Goat person QUICK

my doe gave birth, I assuming either last night or early this morning. When I found the kid it was dead. My question is her colostrum. It is the consistancy of glue. Is this normal? I've contacted the vet-but I have not heard back. Anyone ever encounter this?

My goats colostrum was very thick and sticky, not quite like glue, but that may be normal. A lot depends on the individual goat. Sorry about your kid being dead

Are you positive she doesn't have another? She may be drying off due to a stillbirth if it didn't die in the night.

I don't think she has another. When I saw her this morning she was trying to eat the afterbirth, so I don't think it has been to long. She never really bagged up real big to begin with. I emptied her bag hoping it would help. I haven't removed the kid from her yet. It seem to make her feel better, but I'm about to pull it.

Was she due? She may have aborted the fetus early. If that's the case, you need to take swabs to send off to your state vet for analysis.

I talked to the lady that has her twin and she said that the other one was about to drop too. I just hope she will bag up and be able to be milked.

Start milking her. The act of milking will cause her to come into milk. I have had goats that just had a squirt or two each milking come into regular production. If you don't milk her she probably won't make milk.

Wash the udder with warm water to soften any dried colostrum and make the udder more supple. Then milk her out twice a day. It's been awhile since I've milked goats, but I don't remember it being so thick. I would also make sure she has plenty of warm water. It could be she has not been drinking enough because of the distress of birth. If the water is too cold, she may not be drinking enough.

yes, colostrum is very sticky and thick. save it!!!small water bottles work great, fill and freeze. never know when a doe won't have colostrum, or a neighbors. then milk the goat like said above, twice a day. may take a couple days for her to really produce, but if you demand the milk, she will produce it.

YES--Do save it! Just freeze it in case....I had a bunch frozen and saved and I had a call to help a Cria whose Mom died. We saved it! You just never know when you need some colostrum.....Terri O in WI--expecting babies any day....

Oh Yeah....good colostrum is very thick, sticky and yellowish. If the milk is starting to come in already that is when you have a thinner colostrum...not as good, but still useful! HTH--Terri O
