At the end of February I purchased 5 chicks from Bomgaars in Iowa the Hatchery was Hoover's Hatchery also in Iowa. I knew I wanted barred rocks a red Sex Link and a couple Easter Eggers. Well, one of the supposed Easter Eggers, (by the way was sold as Ameraucana) just laid her first egg and it is neither blue nor green, but brown. I paid $15 for the both of them in hopes of blue or green eggs for our children. Do you suggest contacting the police they were purchased from, or the Hatchery? I just feel as though I was duped.

And no, it wasn't from another hen, I watched her lay it. Frustrating.

Unfortunately not all Easter eggers lay green or blue eggs, some lay brown. Since Easter eggers are a mixed breed some don't have the usual characteristics that we have come expect from them, which is unfortunate. I'm not liking that many don't have muffs now either. They are getting too mixed I think now, especially for my tastes.

I'm sorry, I feel like feed stores don't always disclose information about the "Americanas" they sell very clearly, especially since they are really just Easter Eggers and not actual Ameraucanas. It's very misleading, particularly for someone just starting out. I understand why you would feel duped. Unfortunately there really is no guarantee what color egg an EE will lay. Hopefully you're other EE will give you some pretty colored eggs!

I think you're screwed.
Hoover's sell what they call "Americana" and it clearly states they could lay brown eggs so I doubt complaining would do much.
I don't know how they were listed at where you purchased them. If it was Americana then they'll probably just pass the buck onto the hatchery. If they were listed as Ameraucana then you have an argument but that may be all you have.
If it was me I'd politely contact both places with your concern. You never know and it couldn't hurt just to see what they say.

The store we bought ours from had them labeled as “Americana”/“Easter Egger”. I had read enough to know that there was a possibility of green, blue, pink or even brown in some cases so I wasn’t expecting any for sure blue eggs or green eggs but was hopeful. We did end up with a couple that lay a blue-green egg & 1 that lays a pretty pale sky blue egg.

I wish stores were upfront about the possibility of other colors though. The store we bought ours from stated on the label that the “Americanas” laid blue eggs.

Thanks everybody, I failed to mention they sold me a buff orpington that turned out to be a red sex link as well. I'm just overly frustrated. and my girls are absolutely devastated that there are no blue or green eggs. They're also laying at five month old whereas Easter Egger hens lay at 7. They don't have beards either.

Can you post a body shot of this bird? That doesn’t look anything like a hatchery Easter Egger.
