The vent sexing. I’ve seen it. It’s the most accurate way but don’t EVER do it unless trained

I'm talking about when they're throwing males and females down a schute and they fall on a conveyor belt and the male's go to...you know where....The vent sexing. I’ve seen it. It’s the most accurate way but don’t EVER do it unless trained
Even more disturbing is what they do with all the male chicks no one wants anymore because no one is willing to butcher their own birds anymore. If everyone ordered straight run and took care of business, sexing would be unnecessary.Don't ever watch videos of a hatchery while they're sexing them. I was so disturbed.
So true Lisa.Even more disturbing is what they do with all the male chicks no one wants anymore because no one is willing to butcher their own birds anymore. If everyone ordered straight run and took care of business, sexing would be unnecessary.
Much appreciated .We all stood hunkered over the nesting box waiting for her to finally lay the egg and when the girls heard it thump they hurriedly grabbed it. The look of Devastation on their faces hurt me more than anything. I told them I would try to figure out what "Alice" and "Isabelle" really were and they could show other chickens next year. Their immediate response was they wanted Sapphire Gems. I guess the girls love blue! We’ve had a lot of fun buying the color of eggs we wanted from farmers we met at farmers’ markets and putting them under broody chickens. I’m not sure how much room you have, or if you’re open to hatching roos, but that’s an amazing thing for kids to see. The bad part is that the chicks that we buy and cuddle are so much more friendly than ones raised by chickens though. It’s still neat to see. We’ve had Japanese bantams hatch buff orpingtons, ameracaunas, and even a duck once! If you do get real ameracauna eggs, be warned that the hatch rate is much lower for them. Our kids knew all about it, but it was still sad. You are doing such a great thing for your kids! My three are now in their late teens and still have chickens and ducks, and they have wonderful memories of growing up with many different animals. Bravo, Mama!
I love my Sapphire Gems. They are very sweet and even started laying at 16 weeks! It’s fun to see the different colors they end up being too. Here are some pics of mine. They do lay light brown eggs though and not blue. Some people think they lay blue but that’s a different breed.Much appreciated .We all stood hunkered over the nesting box waiting for her to finally lay the egg and when the girls heard it thump they hurriedly grabbed it.
