Need Advice, not the chicken I was promised.

The 'Poultry Expert' at my local feed store insisted that if you dangle a chick by its head, the way it holds its legs will tell you what gender it is.
:th She should have been reported to the manager, and told never to go near the chicks again!

How odd that they were sold as Easter Eggers.
Unless they somehow ended up in the wrong bin. That can happen, too.

This is my first go-round with Hoover hatcheries. In previous years that Hatchery wasn't being sold at our farm supply store here. I unwittingly took for granted the price point and didn't do my research on the Hatchery until a month after I purchased the chicks
My local farm store gets their chicks from Hoovers. I ordered through the farm store, Hoover shipped them to the store. That might be an option in the future if you don't want to deal directly with a hatchery.

I also had one that was black and turned into this:

Oh, he's BEAUTIFUL!

I was charged $15 per chick

Highway robbery unless they were actually Ameraucana, which they weren't. The fact that they were labeled "EE/Ameraucana" is a dead giveaway of false advertising. They were selling EE, but charging Am prices.

I suspect that the term 'Easter Egger' has only been in use for as long as Ameraucana have been recognized as the name of a breed, as a means of differentiating birds bred only for a range of colorful eggs from any number of different stock types from those bred specifically for blue eggs and particular physical traits - muff, beard, body type, comb and feather color.

They almost look like hatchery quality Buckeyes?

No. Buck Eye have pea combs. These birds have rose combs. I do not know any breed that matches this description.

Word to the wise: If you want a specific breed, do business directly with the hatchery. Bypass the feed stores. Do your homework ahead of time and find out what the going price is in your area for a hatchery chick.

I forgot to mention that mine were incubated and hatched by me.
BUT.... They are RIR hens x with EE roosters and 98% of them have hatched with the beards/muffs.
The rooster must have really strong genes, LOL.
The lighter of the chipmunk looking chicks ended up being a hen :clapand she is laying a green egg every day for me. The funny thing is, we sell brown eggs and I was hoping for replacement brown egg layers for this fall. :lau

Oh, my gosh. I'm in LOVE with him!!

He is beautiful and he knows it... I tell him all the time that he will be getting intimate with the soup pot if he doesn't behave.

He is the single survivor of his hatch batch so was raised on his own with a mirror for company until he was about 6-8 weeks then the 3 chicks in the picture (hatched 3 weeks later than him) were old enough to be put in a divided pen (he on one side them on the other) could see each other but not hurt them. One of the three is a hen and I have them penned together now.

The funny part is that when the three hatched my little niece asked if he was the mommy because he was bigger (by this time i could tell he was a cockerel) so i told her no that is the brother, and he was then dubbed "Brother Bird" by my niece and to this day that is his name. :gig

The woman I bought my EE pullets from has been breeding and raising chickens for decades, insisted they were Ameraucanas, and that she'd never heard of EE's. She was very offended when I called them EE's - but it's what they are. I'm waiting to see what color egg they lay. Blue, green, yellow, pink, brown, tan, white...

One of the barnyard mutt chicks I hatched is EE x Cochin. From day one it has had muffs, and it has feathered legs, a pea comb. I'm very curious to see what she eventually lays - assuming it's a she.
Yea I’ve heard the same thing to determine gender but also herd it’s old wives tale. Maybe I misunderstand but something about dangle a chicken by it’s head seems cruel

Agree completely, never again.

I'm suspecting they are a pea comb version of a brown leghorn obviously mixed, not pure.
