Need advice on gosling

I don't have any chick grit on hand, but I do have some sand. Could I put a little bit of the smallest sand in with them instead?

The poop is caked around the vent. The stomach looks like they might've been laying in it, but when I've seen it poop, it looks runny, so I'm not sure why it would be caking around the vent. The fact that it seems to be caking around the vent would be the only reason I'd be worried. Any ideas there? I can try to get the caked-on stuff off when I give it a bath this evening, but I would prefer to fix the problem if there is a problem that can be fixed.

AS for the drainage - I just noticed it when I was holding the gosling earlier. It shook its head and got the clear stuff off when I first picked it up. I attributed it to water from the water bowl, but then it shook its head again ~5 minutes later and shook off some clear stuff again, so it seems to be drainage and not just from the water bowl. Would you agree? If so, what can I do for it?
Fine sand would be good just sprinkle it on the bottom of your brooder and they will pick it up as needed. even with the pooped caked on its bottom it's still pooping right? If a chicken gets like that it's called pasty butt and can be fatal but i have never heard of goslings doing it. pasty butt means the chick can't poop because the vent is blocked up. Some folks say to add ground up regular oatmeal to their feed and it's suppose to clear pasty butt right up, I don't know if it works because I' ve never had a chick have it. Maybe soaking it in a warm bath will get it off then you can look at it's ven and make sure it's normal looking. I don't know what Vi Tal is but i do know that Poultry Nutri Drench is awesome stuff and you can give it straight to them by mouth and in their water. As for the clear drainage not sure on that one, but I have seen my ducks do this when I pick them up clear water will come out of their nares. I wouldn't go get antibiotics just yet. I think if you will put a piece of sod dirt and all into their brooder they will not only benefit from it but have fun playing with it.

As far as I can tell, it is still pooping, yes. What is "normal" for a gosling? I tried to look last evening when I took the gosling out of the bath, but I don't know what 'normal' is. This is the first gosling I've had.

Vi-Tal is a supplement I got at Orscheln's that has Niacin in it. Since the gosling has been a bit wobbly, I thought adding the Vi-Tal to the water would be helpful.

Are these symptoms something I need to worry about? Should I just keep giving it a daily warm bath and cleaning it's bottom up and then keep an eye on it? Is there anything else I should be doing for it?

Water fowl have watery poop because they drink alot of water. I would look at your other goslings vent and then at the one your concerned about to make sure all is normal after they have their bath, I wouldn't stop giving the ViTal unless your out then maybe switch to Brewers yeast or Poultry Nutri Drench . you want to keep going with the supplements till you see marked improvement and then continue the niacin for at least 6-8 weeks when they are growing so rapidly . Keep doing what your doing giving warm baths making sure they don't chill keeping up the vitamins, even on a really nice warm day taking them outside for a bit of sunshine and grass clipping. never leave them alone outside though. please keep giving updates. and hoping this lil one continues to grow strong.

I only have one gosling so I can't compare vents. I can compare the gosling's vent to that of my duckling, I guess.

I did look at the gosling's vent after its bath. Despite having soaked in warm water for 45 minutes, it still had a little bit of poop caked around its vent. Other than that, I didn't see anything that looked abnormal (to my untrained eye).

Thank you for the input! I will definitely keep giving updates.

I'm sorry I guess I read your post wrong I thought you had 2 goslings and a duck.Keep an eye on the vent making sure that the poop doesn't cover over the vent and harden. Ducks and goslings are very close to the same in vents. lol

I checked the gosling's vent again this morning. It had poop caked around it, but it looked a lot better than it did yesterday prior to its bath. I've also noticed that it seems to be eating a lot more now, too. It is still somewhat shaky on its feet, but even that is better than it had been.

Thats great news. Just keep doing what your doing and hopefully it will continue to gain strength.

So, my gosling is still more wobbly than I would like. I noticed yesterday that it picked its head up high and nearly fell over backwards. Another thing I realized yesterday is that my gosling isn't the only one eating the grass and other greens I put in for them. Apparently, my duckling has taken a liking to such things as well. It's supposed to be nice today (high of 82 and not real windy) so I'm gonna try to take them outside later today. I'm also gonna look into getting the brewer's yeast to put in their water. Can someone tell me how to use it?

Put the Brewers yeast on their food. about a tab to a cup of feed. and are you still giving the ViTal? I would deff keep it up or some other kind of Poultry vitamins. it should be getting stronger so I wouldn't put off getting these 2 things. and outside would be good if sun is shining and theres green grass to eat. Glad your duckling has found greens tasty.

Yes, I am still dosing the Vi-Tal.

For the Brewer's Yeast, are you supposed to break open the tab? I've found two places that I'd be interested in getting the Brewer's Yeast from. Wal-Mart is cheaper than any of the other places, especially since I wouldn't have to pay shipping.

Would the brewer's yeast from wal-Mart work? http://www.walmart.com/ip/ProSense-Brewer-s-Yeast-Dogs/10318454

Otherwise, I had thought about getting it from www.joshsfrogs.com: Here's a link to their brewer's yeast: http://www.joshsfrogs.com/brewers-yeast-5-lbs-15-cups.html

Is there a different place that I should get the brewer's yeast from?
