need advice on treating ducks that were attacked

I can't believe how much they've improved in just a few days!
They don't look or act so sickly, and their appetites are pretty much back to normal. I just put down a bowl of corn in water and they were just a bunch of regular ducks, pushing each other out of the way to get their share and gobbling as fast as they could. I bet it was all gone inside a minute, lol. And just look at the amount of poo! I just put that blanket down yesterday morning. I bet they didn't poo that much in the first 5 days they were inside :lol:

Hard to beleive poop can be so exciting!

I packed up Tony, Blanche, and Rose and called my vet's office, who informed me that not only were they only open for routine stuff, but the vet I always see that has experience with ducks is out of town. He checked their mouths, wings, and eyes (apparently if they're still pink around the eyes they haven't lost too much blood), but didn't clean them off or check the wounds really at all. When I asked, he said it looked like they weren't bleeding any more since their feathers were all matted and that their flesh is tender and he didn't want to tug and risk making it worse. I asked if I could put them in a bath and let them clean as much as they want and he said yes, but that I shouldn't try to do it myself. I put them in the tub when we got home and Rose and Tony kind of tried to swim but you could tell it hurt and they never did get their heads and necks under water. I tried to gently pour water on them but they didn't care for it and I didn't want to stress them out any more.
Now granted I don't read a lot of the injured duck threads on here because it breaks my heart so much, but the ones I have read seem to contradict his advice - I should clean them up and spray veterycin on them. He did give me oxytetracycline for them.
Honestly, not knowing how much, if any, experience he has with ducks, I trust the experts on here more - what do you think?
P. S. If anybody needs to see pics, I'll post them, but otherwise I'm not subjecting people to that... I hate seeing ducks hurt. :(

We just had this happen a few months ago! I even called the emergency vet Achaean of time and the receptionist laughed and said she thought I said dog not duck...

Anyway, that vet just redressed them and said the bleeding had stopped. I had rinsed their wounds with water and wrapped them with gauze and vet wrap. So I kept them inside in the tub, kept them clean (yes that was a challenge), and made them nutrient rich food till my bird vet was back. I also used VetRx and real lavender to help with the stress. Our vet did stitches on one and wrapped a broken wing on the other. She said to keep in mind that they are wild enough to try to hide there pain. My prayers for you and your feathered babies! :fl

Sounds like you did a good job.
I'm so sorry your babies were hurt - hope they're back to normal now.:hugs
 
Okay, something is wrong with Tony. He wasn't as energetic as the girls so over the weekend I left him in the tub for some peace while they went out in the pen. I just put them back in there and he was falling stumbling all over the place. I thought maybe the tub was just slick but he's like that on the floor too. He acts like he's drunk, his head wobbles when he lifts his neck up (which isn't much, he's keeping it tucked down a lot), and he can't walk straight.
Oh guys, this is bad :hit I don't know have the first clue what's wrong and I'm no comfort to him whatsoever (he's not a people duck), but it's hard to watch him flopping around!
