Correct me if I'm wrong, but the OP doesn't know what type of duckling it is and as we don't have pics and as the duckling is still very young, any attempt to determine its type could be completely wrong at this point. And, as was stated earlier, it's not normal behavior for a wild duckling to go towards humans in the fashion described by the OP, it could very easily be a drop off by someone who found out that ducklings are a lot of work, or couldn't keep it, or some other reason we obviously can only speculate about.
Until there is confirmation that it is indeed a mallard, any legal issues are moot.
While I do agree that it is best to inform the OP about the laws, regulations, and potential ramifications, there is no point getting noses out of joint until there is proof that something illegal has or is taking place.

The OP has posted up a pic on the first thread they started. I told them the best way to find out if its legal or not is to contact a wildlife rehab, as they can tell the OP themselves what they think. There is a whole other thread about this that I think you have missed that includes a photo. The comments are being made about wild vs domesticated mallards because that's what the OP asked about. Point is- you don't take something from the wild without finding out if its legal! It doesn't matter what breed or species if you don't know you should find out, not assume that it's legal.

Hey everyone. I haven't been on in a while, I don't want anyone arguing about this anymore. I feel bad. So lets just let it go and get back to being happy duck owners. And hopefully allow me to be a part of that group. So on a lighter note these guys are growing so fast, and have become part of the family, they even get along with my golden retriever. I'm still doing a lot of reading about ducks and raising them. Hope we all are ok here and no hard feelings about this whole subject bc I want to be treated the same as the rest of you despite where I got my duck.

Yes of course by all means listen to all the "great advice" you're getting here. Only good things can come from breaking federal law and posting about it on a public forum.[/quote I think you should calm down just a little. Probably easy for you to say bc its not you and your duck, and seriously are we going to keep acting like I vandalized the Lincoln memorial? I rescued a baby duck that was in a nasty pond alone. With all the horrible people commiting terrible crimes in this country every day, in sure America will sleep safe if they got this crazy duck mom with a big heart locked up!

You miss my point. If you choose to either obey or not obey the law is a choice you need to make for yourself. I just think it is irresponsible for others here, who will not be facing the judge, to advise you to ignore federal law. And lastly, if one were to break the law, any law, it would be ill advised to make that fact known on a public forum. You seem to be confusing simple advice for judgment.

Actually by telling her not to care about the law one could potentially be implicated as a conspirator, but that's neither here nor there because, despite your incessant paranoia, the police aren't going to come asking about the provenance of one duckling. I think the sane advice in this situation is to not worry about it. What's funny/ironic is it seems to me that YOU seem to be confusing advice for judgment, judging not just the thread starter but also everyone weighing in against your own unsound opinion. Grow up.

new duck mom--enjoy your ducklings! They grow up so fast!

Wow. I wasn't confusing any of the helpful advice for judgement. I was getting a little confused when so much of the simple duck advice turned into legal advice and being told I'm breaking federal laws. Any paranoia I may have had came from so many people on this forum, I thought this was a fun place where people talked and traded stories about their ducks, and that's all I was trying to do at first. And wouldn't you say telling me to grow up and calling me paranoid is a tad on the judge mental side??? Not to mention rude and way out of line.

My response was directed at "Quack Addict", not you! Sorry you took it that way. I've been supporting you in this thread! Like I said, enjoy your duckling, don't worry about the legal issues they won't be a problem, even if the duck was wild or not.

I just super doubt that wildlife and game authorities are trolling the poultry forum trying to catch people keeping wild ducks. Especially not one duck. As I've said before I think a lot I people on here are looking too hard for drama, so everything becomes a huge deal
