All,

I was checking on my flock this morning and I noticed several birds pecking at the back of one of my RIR pullets. I gathered the bird up and on her back behind her wing there is an open wound. I have isolated the bird and she seems fine, but I am wondering what kind of wound care should I try on her? Or should I just let it heal on its own and then re-introduce her to the flock?

Any help would be appreciated.

Wound care for chickens is as important as it is for humans. Maybe especially so due to the dirty environment they live in.

Clean the wound with soap and warm water or saline if you have it. Flush the wound thoroughly to remove all dirt and foreign matter. Then inspect the wound. Does it appear to have been caused by an accident or a predator? Do you see penetrating puncture wounds? Is there any reddening and swelling of the tissue around the wound?

If the answers are "yes" to these questions, you would do well to give this hen a round of an oral antibiotic.

To continue wound care, it's important to keep the wound moist with an antibiotic ointment (does not take the place of an oral antibiotic), and clean the wound every day until healed. If you have Blu-kote, you may paint it on the wound and it will disguise it so the other won't peck at it. But finish with a topical ointment to keep the wound moist.

This stuff is amazing!!!!! You can get the bigger spray bottles i get it here at a store that sells a big bottle really cheap!
But its amazing how much it heals them. And can be used on any animal!

Thanks everyone for all the helpful information. I am getting the recommended products today on my trip to TSC. The hen seems ok, but I will keep her isolated a couple days so I can better take care of her wound.

Great community and great advice.
