apparently it takes quite a while to be able to really sex them... like when their snoods come in full force. mine are still wee ones, and i've no clue what they are. some have said you can tell by the head shape, but mine all look the same, so that's no help.

they grow FAST. my 4 (2 7-week-old Bourbon Reds and 2 9-week-old Royal Palms) are in with 5 7-week-old chicks and they pretty much tower over them. oh, and the gobbling is totally going to make you melt. it's so adorably pathetic, like a cockerel first trying to crow but even cuter cause it's a gobble!

they do require a bit more coddling than chicks. a bit higher temps and they do best on 24% protein. i had one in the house with a cut foot for a week and it turned into a big cuddle monster too. it peeped a lot when i wasn't with it, but would cuddle up in my lap and fall asleep for hours.

good luck with your precious little gobbler!

Thank you so much for your post! Even if it has a sad start.

I had begun to think maybe it was younger, it's still a little wobbly on it's feet. I don't know how far it had to travel to get to my fence, but my dog chases adult wild turkeys off our property, so it had to travel at least 200 feet onto my property to get to the chickens.

It's much calmer today and I've seen it peck at food, and eat a little bit of crumbles, so I'm hoping you're right and it picks up on the eating part. Seems to be a strong little bugger. I put my hand into the brooder and it climbs right onto my hand.

Wow, it's going to take that long? And if they grow that fast, I'd better get the coop done so I have someplace to put it!

Very cute little turkey! i am raising turkeys this year for the first time. You do need to be conscientious about making sure they eat and drink, tapping with your finger in the water and food dish. Marbles in the water will encourage them to peck and drink. Mashed hard boiled eggs are very good for them, too. i raised some babies with chicks, so they got the medicated Start and Grow - for others i used the Flockraiser. They all seemed to do fine.

i found my baby turkeys to be very sweet and calm. They loved being held and would look up into my eyes. One of my turkeys is a wild mix, but you couldn't tell by the behavior. On sexing, it can take a while, from what i've read. My oldest ones are two months now and i do see some of them displaying. But i've read that sometimes the ladies will display. Don't know if that's true or not, as i'm a newbie.

i really love my turkeys. They make the coolest sounds. i'm looking forward to hearing my first "Gobble".

Well, the little buddy passed away this morning. He was fine yesterday. He must have been sick, I held him this morning, though he was barely hanging on, he made his little cheepy noise at me. I don't know what would have caused him to decline so quickly. He died a short time later. He's now buried next to my Buff Orp, Tweety.

He was such a sweet little guy.
