My HOA is positively militant in what it will and won't allow, as in, they will allow nothing and won't allow anything. So a traditional pond is out of the question. I have one call duck and would like to make a lovely small boxed pond for my front porch. Something like the link below, only wider so he can still swim around a bit. Has anyone ever built anything like this? I'm not the handiest person so any advice is appreciated!

That is lovely... alternately, you could use a horse trough or antique tub and landscape with potted plants. Just be sure and set it up so you can drain it into the garden... even with one duck it will get very dirty.

Ah, someone else living in a neighborhood with ducks..? Could you build an enclosed porch and install a pond? Like a sunroom. O could you build a swimming pool? Those are expensive and hard to keep up with though. You may be able to fashion some kind of collapsible pond out of wood. Maybe wood with a tarp liner? I dont know I'm just throwing random ideas out there.

Building all that is definitely out of my budget, and knowing the Association they probably would nix it anyhow. Grumble. I like the trough idea though! Right now I'm hunting for old box planters on craigslist that I can reinforce, toss some pond liner in and maybe add a plug hole for easy draining/refilling.

And random ideas is exactly what I'm looking for! Plants, materials, methods, etc. that a duckie would like, all that. Thank you guys, this is awesome!

From your post, it seems like you're looking for something more permanent, but if not you could always use a kiddie pool. When/if I get my ducks that's what I'll be using. I really like the bath idea though. Creative.

Not permanent so much as aesthetically pleasing so the Association won't pitch a fit.

Our HOA is like that. No sheds (or structures other than your house), no metal swing sets, no above ground pools, and I'm sure no ponds, although our neighbors built a deck about 15 years ago with a huge fire pit in the center. About 5 years ago they transferred the fire pit into a pond with fish. In the middle of their deck. Just throwing that out there if that helps give you any ideas.

Our ducks swam in a fire pit outside until the pond was finished... not ideal, but they loved it. They'd swim around in circles, diving underwater and zooming around the edge, then flapping anyone who came within range!

I plan on just using my bathtub until the pond box is finished. :p

I'm still scared that no matter how cautious I am, I'll still get fined. I mean, no hummingbird feeders? Seriously?! They also dinged my neighbor for leaving his trash can out a paltry 8 hours past trash pickup. They also threatened last week to fine me for having bamboo that was there when I bought the house....three whole years ago. And yet, they seem to forget about the no dog policy since most of my neighbors have them, and also don't fix things they should like broken water mains at our gym and cracked pavement in the community pool.

Yeah, I hate these people.

Oh, mine were in the bathtub, too!!! Lemme dig up a pic. I'm very grateful that we don't need to deal with any BS like that. We're in a historic district so the city is very strict on construction, but they are open-minded about most else. Let me build a swimming pool, cabana, and duck pond... plus we can have chickens! Looking at my neighbors yard, tho, I wish there were more restrictions. LOL.
