Need hatching buddy! Setting 5 duck and 5 hen eggs Sat 1/16

After much study I ended up building one just like this. I was at Aldis' and they had a HUGE Christmas tree "Rubbermade Box"

I thought is was cavernous when I first put the chicks in but they have grown so fast is seems only adequate at this time.

Yeah i was surprised last year how quickly they grew out of it. We moved them to a growing pen at about 4 weeks outside with a heat lamp.

YIKES!!!

RE: brooder

For a small hatch(up to 12 birds), we start out in a big plastic tub(gigundo rubbermaid type) with a lamp(regular bulb). The baby pool is an excellent idea, except the duck took over ours LOL The tub heats up too much with the red heat bulb. Good luck everybody!

They do, now is the time to watch, and adjust if need be...I had to turn mine down a smidge this am

I can't believe we are all talking about lockdown already!

On that note...I think I only have 8 or 9 that are viable by this point. After the weekend, I will discard any that quit along the way. Those with more in their bators may have to adjust more for the heat coming off the eggs. Don't change it too much, though...baby steps

It makes sense and i understand now why I had the spike. I didnt think of that. I will make sure i check it frequently. Unfortunately I am out of the house for 8 hours a day and DH, who works from home, would rather not run down there 300 times to check and report back to me lol
can't imagine why.

I'm a fan of the Rubbermaid brooder!!! Just recently bumped 3 ee's and 1 splash orp (8 wks+) out of 2 lg. bins and into a large cage w/ homemade perch w/tray underneath (TSC) in the family room. I keep brooders in a glass enclosed shower stall with a heat lamp suspended from a beam that can be raised. I'm fretting more over when I'll be able to move the older chicks out to the coop. Our high temp won't even reach 10 today and the wind chills are sub zero.

If you don't have a brooder already, rubbermaids are very easy to clean!!!
