Can anyone tell me what this is? I just got home and this was hanging out of her butt.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but it almost looks as if she were attacked.

I don't think she was attacked. Its a long thing coming out of her butt. It almost looks like her intestines. She is not moving much. My daughter is afraid she is going to die as so do I.

She may have prolapsed and your other chickens picked at it a bit. There is treatment for prolapse, but I have never seen anything this bad and certainly couldn't give you a very good prognosis, sadly.

I am sorry this happened. This is a delicate situation, but, I am pretty sure she will have to be put down. It looks like an intestine to me, also. I sure hope not...... But, it looks like a severely damaged intestine..... Are you prepared to put her down if need be?

What do you think would cause this? I've never seen anything quite like it.

I have. I worked in breeder houses for commercial broilers. If/when a hen had a prolapse, the other hens would tear the prolapse up and intestines would come out. We culled them on the spot.
