Need help asap - Dying Chicks

Just so you know, medicated feed is not a sure way of preventing Coccidiosis. If a bird is introduced to large quantities of Coccidia, or to a different type of Coccidia (like when they move to a new home), the medicated feed isn't always enough to prevent their bodies from becoming overloaded.

The new chicks are housed on a different area of the property than my adult hens and when I have not kept any chickens before. They are separated my about 1/2 acre (I wanted separate flocks).

Could the coccidia have traveled that far from my adults or just be lying around the property? We've had a very dry summer, so the ground is bone dry.

Cocci protozoa live in the soil and can be tracked all over your property on your shoes etc.

Well heck! I make it a habit not to traipse around the chick coop/run, but can't say I never stepped there before (especially since I had to build the coop/run). :-(

Could the babies have contracted it & died within 4 days from cocci on my property? I was about to have words with the breeder and don't want to blame him for my mistake.

Cocci is a parasitic infection of the intestinal tract it is spread by droppings which get into feed/water via droppings, can also be spread by wild birds, bringing in new chickens, your own clothes/shoes/hands/feed utensils etc. Yes it will spread and yes they can die within 4 days. Cocci is the leading cause of death in chicks, but it is easily controlled if you are aware of the symptoms, and medicated immediately. There are 9 strains of cocci,so an overload/outbreak can happen at anytime, older hens can also have a cocci overload/outbreak.

Thank you. This was explained quite differently where I got the Corvid.

I did lose another chick about an hour ago. Very sad I didn't catch it in time as you said. I did get enough Corvid for any future issues/outbreaks.
