Need help diagnosing a rooster with red inflamed legs

Hey guys!
One of my Sussex Bantam rooster has red inflamed skin on his legs. What could this be? Is it contagious? And what are the treatments for this. I have him separated from the flock right now but he was with them for a while till my friend noticed his legs. I would like any help anyone will give. Thank you.

What could this be?

Have no idea but it doesn't look good.
Might be something common with feather legged birds,
with which I am unfamiliar.
Looks like scales are totally missing in places/
Scales that are there are raised, so maybe scaly leg mites?

As @aart already has pointed out this is a common problem with feathered legs when the pinfeathers start to pierce through the skin. Some birds with heavily feathered legs and toes even have problems to walk during this time.

You might want to help relieve the pain and prevent scaly leg mites to aggravate the situation by spraying the legs with Ballistol: https://www.ballistol-shop.de/Ballistol-Animal-500-ml-aminal-care-oil-Atomizer_B-S_341.html

I'm commenting because my two Cochin's feet look like this. I received them as adults as my first chickens so I thought it was normal and only since joining this forum did I start to question it. I'm still not sure if it's normal or not, but they are at least four years old and neither limps or outwardly shows signs of pain. Their feet are heavily feather, more so even than your bird.

You mean like the scales that are normally on chicken feet? Too be honest I've never been able to catch either of them for closer inspection. I can get within a foot of them, and can see the redness between the feathers, but I assumed I was seeing red scales and not scaleless feet.

Yes.
I do all exams off the roost after dark wearing a headlight....
...much easier to 'catch' them then!

Scaley leg mites are common. Especially with feather legged birds.
Last time I checked, Sussex don't have feathered legs.

Is this a typical problem with feather-footed breeds? Because I have some bantam Cochins that I want to keep healthy.
