Need help finding breed of dog that is right for my family UPDATE #43

I appreciate all the feedback on Border Collies. This is a breed I do have more experience with. Years ago my room-mate had one. That dog was the most intense dog I've ever known. His ONLY interest was fetching his ball and he would do it for as long as you would throw it. Once fetched he'd drop it in front of you then back away a few feet and just stare at the ball, hardly blinking, let alone moving, until it was thrown again - even if that was hours later. He was actually way too intense but very intelligent and had no behavioral issues so my overall impression of him was positive.

A friend of mine has an Australian Cattle dog that's like that, only he gives up before hours fly by. Very smart dog though! Fun to train. One warning on collies (not border): they are known for barking and the one I grew up with especially loved to bark at night.

On a side note. Maybe you can get in touch with horse people and ask if any of them are rehoming a dog? You might get lucky and find a horse-loving dog.

Don't look at it as a mixed breed look at it as a GLAMOUR breed.

I still think they are over priced and should be max of 100-200 dollars.

I agree. I think they've gotten a little carried away with the whole designer breed thing. I paid $150 for mine. I ran into a couple at the dog park that had a labradoodle bigger than a great dane - they had him shipped in from Australia for $2200.

We have a Bichon/Poodle mix ( may be something else in him, who knows!) His name is Cody. He is 26 pounds and a total baby

We rescued him from being put down at animal control, I must say he has been the best $65 we have spent

He has a deep bark tho and will protect the chickens and us. He barks at anyone that is new or he thinks is a threat, but doesn't bark all the time which is nice. He likes to spend his time with the chickens and even the day old chicks, has has had them climb all over him. He doesn't shed which is great, but does need trimmed which I do myself, and he has never dug a hole since we got him. He can RUN! He keeps up with our grey hound/whippet mix ( 30-35 mph! ) I believe in rescues all the way

I would suggest a Rhodesian Ridgeback, they are great dogs that I think fit your situation almost perfectly. They're a medium to large dog that is a known for being a great guard dog. They can run practically forever, the farthest I ran with mine was about 23 miles only I was on a bike

. I think this video mentions everything you need to know about the breed. http://animal.discovery.com/videos/dogs-101-rhodesian-ridgeback.html

I'm so glad to hear you're going to get a rescue dog, they are the best...poor things all need homes!!! I still think you should consider a boxer mix... here's our Bruno, he's so gentle with the girls (actually gentle with all animals and people!). He's got short hair so no grooming, and he's very much a mid-size dog, weighs about 60 lbs.

I'm not sure what Bruno is mixed with but at one point I suspected a ridgeback mountain dog or a greyhound but who really knows ...he's pretty fast when he runs!

Def the Border collie.
We just in october got our first dog in 10 yrs. We didn't know anything about the border collie but went to look at the pups and came home with the sweetest medium haired dog my dad didn't get my moms permission for a dag and she DID NOT want a dog but now she doesn't know what she would do without him. He LOVES our cats just a sweety he did chase them at first until he found out they have sharp claws. Now he doesn't mind them but tries to stay about 10 ft away from them

He doesn't shed much but does need a brushing around 1 time a wk. He doesn't really bark at anything unless there is someone coming or he hears foot steps and growls to protect me

I would say out of any breed either the Australian shepard or the border collie!

I have a border/australian shepherd mix, she is the best daughter I've ever had. I was locked out of my house with 6 feet of snow. I told her mommy needs help, she darted off and got my son from his room to unlock the door. This breed understands english, they know what you are saying so at times you need to speak in code. This is one of the smartest breeds ever as you shall see if you research them. They won't eat the chickens and will help you corral them if needed. I would not have anything else with my chickens!

Standard poodles are wonderful dogs. We have a big black girl named phoebe. She's wonderful around all the animals that we've had except for small rodents. She's great around chickens, ducks, cats she chases but doesn't hurt them, ponies, goats, and birds. We live about 5 minutes out of town so she has lots of room to run around in. We groom her every six months or so, we give her baths every month, and then we clip the hair around her eyes so she can see. We have the groomers cut her all the way down leaving her ears long.
A lot of it is in the training, with any dogs.

I find it quite humorous....the whole "glamour" dog....."designer" dog.....whatever you want to call them......5 years or 10 years ago....poodle x lab....beagle x pug...whatever would have
equaled MUTT and would have been advertised for free to good home. Today, that will be 1500-2000 please! LOL Pretty funny how things change!!!

I have a greyhound, she is a very soft dog- yes she is large size but is a couch potato and only has the one short coat (it does shed)...

It would take work to take a track rescue and make it safe around other animals... mine is cat safe and supervised LF adult chicken safe, not rabbit safe... (duh)...
