I adopted 4 chicks from my son's preschool class in May (they got some eggs from a local farm to hatch in the class and would have given the chicks back to the farm otherwise). I have been trying to figure out their breeds (all seem very different) and sexes. I have some guesses but I wanted to see what everyone else thought. One of them is definitely a male as we are now hearing crowing every morning (I thought they did not start crowing this early).

1. I'm 99.9% sure this first one is the cockerel. My best guess is that he is a black copper marans.

2. I thought at first this one might be a cockerel because it grew so fast and had long tail feathers, but it also seems close to some pictures of Leghorn pullets I've seen.

3. This one is definitely a bantam as she is so much smaller than the others. Also she has very feathered feet. Maybe a Brahma or Cochin?

4. Finally I have a buff coloured one that doesn't really have anything else distinctive about it that could make me guess a breed.

I'm very new to keeping chickens but I am really loving it. I'd appreciate any information you can send my way.

Thanks!

the first one looks like a mix, maybe Crevecoeur? and I think the white one is a leghorn personally, then yes, cochin and RSL

Thanks for the reply!

I'm trying to learn so I'm curious how you were able to tell that the white one was a white rock and not something else like a leghorn? Also, do you agree that the first one is male and the other three are pullets?

yes, only the one roo...and he is beautiful also, very unique...seems like a Crevecoeur/Marans cross, but that seems like an odd chicken to find on a local farm. You should see if you can call them and ask...I would love to find out what he is and get some of my own.

yes the first is a male.

i meant leghorn on the white im thinking about getting some bantam barred rocks so i have rocks on the brain lol

Yeah, first bird is male, and a mixed breed. A closer pic of his comb/head would be cool. He's got something top-hatted in his background. How many toes does he have?

I think the second one is a leghorn pullet. One easy way to tell is if you can see her earlobes--they can be hard to tell at this age. White lobe are leghorn, red lobes are rock. Or, when she lays eggs, white eggs means leghorn, brown are rock. But, to me she's light-bodied enough to be a leghorn, and the tail doesn't look rock-ish. I am a little thrown by the lack of comb, leghorns usually have more comb by now

Bantam cochin pullet. I have a fondness for these--have three of them right now.

Red sex link pullet. Since the eggs came from a farm, not a hatchery, don't know if it was a planned mating or an accident. They're usually great layers of large brown eggs, friendly calm birds.

The legs are too dark for Marans, but the color is fairly right. The comb doesn't look right. Could it be a Welsummer mix? It definitely is a rooster.

The white one looks very much like the white rocks I had when they were young. However, it appears the lobes are white, and if so, probably leghorn.

Here's a closer shot of the head. I think he has 4 toes, but I'll have to check in the morning to be sure. He also has some very light feathering on the side of his legs which is what made me suspect at least part Marans.

Are those feathers coming out of the back of his head? Wow! I've not seen that before with that kind of comb.
