I have 9 week old chicks. They have been living outside in a separate cage to get used to my hens and the temperatures before I moved them into a coop. Saturday morning I came out to a small hole dug under the cage and one chick gone. There were some large feathers from several birds inside and outside the cage. The wing of the missing chick was outside the cage and also a clump of feathers and flesh. I moved the cage and put chicken wire under it that wrapped around the edges and was secured with wire. Sunday morning they we all good. Monday morning I came out and saw feathers and a wound on a bird. The animal had tried digging but hit the wire and stopped. I noticed later he had forced the door off track a bit (it's held in place by a spring), but the hole left behind was maybe only three inches. The cage is a dog run, and is heavy metal with 1" openings. The openings are long rectangles not squares like hardwire.
Here's where is gets really bad. So stop reading if you don't want the graphic details. One had a large section of the shoulder taken off, muscle exposed. And the tip of the opposite wing is torn open. The second chicken had her wing ripped off, its gone. The bones are still there, clean of flesh, and the wing was removed at the joints. Both are still alive right now, although I don't think for much longer.
All the remaining chicks are moving inside the coop tonight. Don't worry the run will no longer be used. I need help identifying the predator so I can protect my coop and my rabbits. I know we have raccoons, barn cats, opossum, and fishers in the area. All have been spotted in my yard at some point over the last few years. Also weasels in the region but not in my neighborhood. I'm suspecting raccoon or opossum based on my research. But I found no reference to anyone having a thing for ripping off wings. I know a fisher is strong enough but I have a bunny who is very easy prey right now in temporary housing. I feel like a fisher would have started their.
Has anyone experienced this before and got a guess what the animal was? It's could be a very bag summer if I can't get rid of it.
Thanks!

Sorry for you loss. :( Probably raccoon, they are known to reach in a rip heads off through the wire, so wing isn't too far fetched. It's why 1/2 inch hardware cloth is suggested. When installed correctly it will keep all predators you indicated out.

Otherwise, all bets are off. You need to trap and dispatch. DO NOT RELOCATE! Or 1/2 inch hardware cloth seems to work well for me with them predators for night time protection if you don't want to be dispatching things. Marshmallows work well for Raccoons. :fl

A photo of this run area where the predator got in would help.....mostly with advice on how to secure it.

Your predator is most likely a raccoon. They are strong and persistent and easily capable of doing the damage you described. Best way to know for certain is to setup a game camera and see what happens along. You may be shocked.......shocked at what shows up........all the things that go bump in the night.

And this might help............

Regrettable, but the most helpful youtube videos to help explain things have been deleted by youtube......deemed offensive because coons were trapped and killed.

So sorry this happened. I also suspected we had a raccoon around and set a trap out. Caught him within 3 days and dispatched him. Now I just have to catch the fischer.
Cat food worked great drawing him to the cage.

Meeeeeeooooow im sorry!! I think raccon also. I had mine in a pen and the raccons scared them next to the wire and pulled them out piece by piece....blood everywhere. Fully fenced and no way to get it. If there are a couple of them they will work together to scare one in a direction while other pulls them out! Rip baby chicks sending unicorn hugs topped with kitty sniffles.

Meow till next meow

I only have had bird and fox problems but I hope you can catch this thing! Maybe use some store chicken cause it clearly likes hicken and catch it with that but maybe tie it to a string the trap so they can’t grab it out

Get a trap and catch it!! They will come back till they are gone.
They only vermin that can squeeze through a 3" hole is rats you wouldn't believe the places they can squeeze into to eradicate them you can use a snap trap on the hole in to the run or go humane and get a box trap baiting it with peanut butter knowing the rat they do just what you said they are ruthless!
Crzytrkr ......

Okay the second attack makes me think raccoon.

The small hole you said was 3" I'm going to say could have been a mink or weasel.

My guess is you have more than one predator. Rats will also attack birds as well. You need to use 1/2" hardware cloth to make sure it's predator proof.
